I spun her chair back around and applied the last of the dye to her hair. “I hope they’re suffering painfully in their hellhole that they created while you and your brother make the most out of the lives you have surrounded by people who love you both.”
When I caught Eve’s watery gaze, I silently cursed myself. Had I overstepped again?
“Sorry, I?—”
She quickly reached up and grabbed my wrist, squeezing it. “Thank you.” She sniffed and huffed out a laugh. “I don’t know why I’m leaking. I… I just really appreciate your words—wishing the donors painful suffering.” She snorted.
Grinning, I winked. “Any time.” I stepped back and added, “Now you have to leave it in for half an hour.” When Eve’s phone rang, I busied myself with taking off the gloves and tidying up.
“Dusty, what’s up? … Tonight? … I don’t know … Yeah, yeah. Okay … I can let Rommy know. She’s right here. … Yep, later.” She hung up and turned her chair around to face me. “The ladies want to go to Quake’s bar tonight for drinks to celebrate Texas and Maya’s last night. Also, apparently Henri needs a night out before he settles into his fathering role.”
Laughing, I shrugged. “I’m in for sure. Did Dusty already tell Texas and Maya?” I gasped and clapped. “You’ll get to show off your new hair.”
She smiled. “She did. She’s with them now. And let’s hope it’ll look okay.”
“Babe, you could do anything to yourself, and you’d still look hot.”
She blushed. “Ah, thanks?”
“No problem. Now, what’s the best thing to wear to a place like Quake’s bar?” Mum and Dad brought a heap of my clothes from home, as well as my phone, so I wanted to make sure I had the right thing to wear for this occasion. I also couldn’t wait to see Quake’s reaction to Eve’s hair.
CHAPTER NINE
QUAKE
It was good to see the place was packed again. I smiled at a couple of regulars as I made my way through the tables to the bar. I’d just come back from the Polished Playground, the strip club I’d invested in with the brothers, to check on how things were coming along with the set-up and to make sure the booze order was correct.
I wasn’t sure which place I’d be managing more at, but at least I had a second in charge I trusted to run things the way I did at both places.
“Drew, need any refills?” I called as I tapped the bar. I chuckled when he shot me the middle finger. Drew wasn’t a member in the Diamond MC, but he was a guy who’d proved himself when I left him in the lurch the times I raced out the door to attend to club business. It was why I gave him a promotion over the other brothers who worked here since they’d be running out of the place with me if club business did arise.
Turning, I rested against the bar and looked around. There were two booths free that we could be putting people in.
“Drew, what?—”
“Dusty called. She and her friends are coming in.”
My damn gut fluttered.
That meant Eve, too, right?
And now there was a twist to my gut when I remembered Eve was avoiding me for some reason. She’d gotten something in her head that was stopping her from coming to me.
She still didn’t understand it wasn’t just about sex between us.
I wanted her as mine.
Even if Tech would beat me black and blue for touching his sister in the first place, I’d risk his wrath just to have her at my side all the time.
On the outside, she was tough and mouthy, but I’d seen a side to her that she hardly showed. A softer side that needed attention and affection and love.
Fuck me. I sounded like a smitten dick, but I couldn’t help notice what Eve wanted, the love and affection, without her even saying it, and I wanted to be the one to give her everything she craved.
She didn’t want to be in charge. She didn’t want to be noticed or mouthy or mean.
She thought that was what people needed from her, so it was who she became.
In the bedroom, she mostly submitted to direction and attention beautifully. Then there were days she was playful and needy.
