"First of all, I just came out of the water, so they’d be pointless. Second, those things contain chemicals that aren’t recommended for pregnant omegas, especially at-risk pregnancies! And besides, they don’t even work when my waves hit. My pheromones overpower everything."

Moor harrumphed.

"Alright, so bottom line, what exactly happened on the beach?"

"I already told you. After they started insulting me, Harry grabbed my neck, sniffed me, said he wanted my ass, and that’s when Rain stepped in and attacked him."

"Alphas are impulsive. This whole thing could’ve been defused."

"Defused? You mean I should’ve politely asked them to leave while they were already sniffing me and reeking of arousal? Or what, let them have a little taste first?"

Moor sighed again and gave me a look like I was some bratty kid throwing a tantrum.

"You’re all worked up. I wasn’t suggesting anything like that."

"Worked up? Please, Detective, spare me the patronizing tone."

My anger kept rising.

"Pregnant omegas get emotional. It’s normal."

"It’s also normal to be emotional when someone nearly gets assaulted."

He went quiet, his gaze drilling into me.

"These guys are hot-blooded. And you, you’re pretty. Two plus two equals trouble. Let’s not make a federal case out of it."

"Oh, so now it’s my looks, my scent, and the alpha instinct to blame? All is resolved, nothing to worry about?"

He didn’t answer, just stared.

"I knew Maurice a little, you know? Met him at the shooting range. Was at a few of his family’s hotels when we got called in for disturbances, small stuff. Good kid. Real shame about those brakes."

I said nothing. I had no idea where he was going with this. Inside, I was shaking. My hands were clenched so tight my nails broke the skin. I could feel something rising in me.

"You need a new man. You’re way too cute to be on your own. Guys like you draw alphas like honey. Plenty would line up to protect you."

I gritted my teeth.

"Cute? That’s… wildly inappropriate to say to me. Almost sounds like you’re volunteering for the protector job."

A strange reddish flush bloomed across Moor’s cheeks. His nostrils flared as he inhaled my scent.

"I’m a happily married man. Just making an observation. A suggestion, for your safety. Strictly professional."

There was just silence… and his gaze; intense, assessing.

Something twisted painfully inside me, rage, helplessness, despair. I wanted out of this room so badly.

"You scared, Kay? You don’t have to be. Everything I said was for your own good."

His voice had a raspy undertone now.

I still didn’t answer. I just stared at him. Every second of this conversation made my skin crawl. I hated this man. He was the perfect example of everything I despised about alphas.

Moor stayed quiet too, but he was still eyeing me. He leaned in a little more. His eyes flicked back to my neck glands. His fingers twitched.

"Can I go now?"
