"Or maybe it’s someone who wants you for himself."
That hit like a bucket of cold water, but I shook it off. "I don’t buy that some random guy would just show up. It’s gotta be someone we’ve interacted with recently…"
"Doesn’t mean he doesn’t want you."
Our eyes met again. I hesitated, then blurted out, "Maybe it’s Moor?"
"The detective? Why him? Unless… he was their accomplice, and knew what they were planning."
"Or maybe Deputy Johnson? His family’s tied to the Dawsons."
We went quiet. Only our breathing and pounding hearts filled the silence. We were obviously shooting in the dark with those guesses.
"But why would he suddenly switch sides, risking charges of complicity… and losing everything he worked for?" Rain muttered.
Neither of us had an answer.
"One more thing," I murmured, remembering something that could be important. "Moor’s a firearms instructor at the local shooting range. He wouldn’t miss, Rain. Three shots, three bodies."
Rain kept working his limbs in slow circles and didn’t reply. I wasn’t sure how long we sat there. Neither of us was in a hurry to crawl past the bodies on the terrace.
Then, out of nowhere, we heard a police siren.
"What the hell? The cops?" Rain sat up straighter, glancing around.
"Whoever shot them… also called the police?" I whispered, stunned. It didn’t add up. Rain and I shared a wide-eyed look.
A few minutes later, we heard muffled knocking on the front door, from around the house, followed by voices. Police.
"Here!" Rain called out.
A moment later, we heard boots pounding the floor. Three officers appeared. One of them was the same guy who tried flirting with me at the station. One was a beta, and the third, a young alpha I didn’t recognize.
As they walked over, Rain quickly explained everything to the beta.
I admired his level-headedness; meanwhile, I could barely collect my thoughts, let alone explain what had happened.
The officers rushed around the building. Rain and I started crawling after them, dragging ourselves on all fours.
When we rounded the corner, we saw them standing over the bodies. The beta was checking for pulses. I closed my eyes for a second; it still seemed surreal. An attack. A shooting.
More turmoil in my life. I cursed under my breath.
Unbelievable. Why couldn’t things just… slow down for once? Move into some new, quieter chapter?
RAIN
What happened next was total chaos. Swarms of cops, medics, and even the coroner showed up. They also brought in Deputy Johnson and the unfortunate Detective Moor, who stood over the bodies, rubbing their chins and talking in low voices.
I could tell by their expressions they weren’t thrilled to see us. Johnson looked irritated, while Moor just seemed confused. A triple homicide in a town this size was huge news.
Kay and I were given immediate medical attention.
Specialists from a bigger fire department in a nearby town showed up, went into the house, and found two canisters filled with some kind of unknown gas. They secured them and sent them off to a lab for analysis.
Adam got home about an hour later, right as the ambulance was taking Kay and me away. The paralysis was wearing off, but way too slowly. We still couldn’t move properly. One of the paramedics was especially worried about Kay and got extra cautious when he heard about the pregnancy.
We were taken to a hospital in the next town over, which had better medical facilities. Adam followed the ambulance, clearly terrified, almost panicking. Not long after, Marco showed up; he’d been at his boyfriend’s place. The moment he got there, he insisted we shouldn’t even think about going back to Adam’s house.
