Kay knew what I meant by it.You are mine.
His eyes went even wider, his cheeks flushing red.
"Call the True Mate Government Agency right now!" I ordered. "Or they’ll separate us!"
A couple of cops moved closer. I stood, hands raised. Kay ran up and waved our certificate at them.
"Officers! I was threatened with rape, I’m pregnant, and my True Mate protected me! This is our certificate!"
One of the officers, an alpha with a bald head, flared his nostrils, already reacting to Kay’s scent. I stepped in right away and wrapped my bloody arms around him.
The cashier shyly peeked out from behind the cop and muttered, "We’ve got it all on camera. You can watch it."
The officer frowned. "Alright, one thing at a time." He looked me over. "You’re not in fighting mode, so you did all that fully lucid?"
"I can explain. I think it’s a side effect of an antidote I took recently."
The cop raised an eyebrow and almost laughed. "How convenient! Save it for a sec. We’ll call medics, but you’re both coming to the station."
"No," I growled. "You’re not separating us. My mate’s not in any shape for that."
"You don’t get a say in this, alpha."
Kay quickly pulled out his phone and started making a call. I almost had a déjà vu moment from the White Cliffs precinct. The local cops weren’t going to be on our side, that much was clear: they’d probably side with the attackers, maybe even know them personally?
"You’ll have to kill me before you touch him," I said, narrowing my eyes.
One of the officers chuckled. "Nobody’s gonna touch him. Cool your jets, fire-eater."
"I don’t believe you. He’s got a powerful Allure, and he’s pregnant. That kind of pull can get out of your control!"
Behind me, I heard Kay on the phone.
"My name is Kay Sanders. I’m here with my boyfriend at a grocery store near the Shell gas station in Salton. We need help. I might get separated from my True Mate. We have our certificate, but the officers are ignoring it. My mate protected me from being raped, and now they want to take us to the precinct…"
He paused, listening while the other officers let the paramedics in to tend to the wounded alphas lying on the floor, cursing loudly.
One of them approached me, trying to check my cuts, but I shook my head.
"I can’t go with them. I’m in a pregnancy-induced quasi-heat wave; I could be in danger at the precinct," Kay added nervously, pressing his ear to the phone.
Another alpha cop, who had been watching everything with a scowl, stepped closer. He demanded our IDs and started checking something on his small tablet.
Kay finished the call and turned to me.
"They’ll be here in half an hour. We got lucky. There’s a branch just ten miles from here."
I smirked at the cop, who’d overheard everything as well. He did not look pleased.
"You two think you’re above the law?" he growled. "True Mates or not, you don’t just get to—"
Kay responded with a growl, though it was an omega growl, much higher-pitched than a typical alpha growl. I turned my head toward him, my eyebrows raised. To me, it sounded kinda sexy! I wouldn’t mind hearing it while being in bed with him…
But Kay wasn’t in the mood; his eyes narrowed.
"If they hadn’t tried to rape me, we wouldn’t be in this situation! You should be on the side of the victim, not the assholes slashing my mate with knives, officer!"
"Walking around with that kind of strong pregnancy scent isn’t exactly responsible, Mr. Sanders. Wouldn’t you agree? In fact, there’s even an ordinance that allows the police to issue a ticket for this or a fine for public disturbance."
