But I didn’t mind.

"I want to, Kay," I said, sitting down next to him and meeting hisgaze. "My work’s flexible. I can spread it out through the day and wrap things up in the evenings. Honestly, I really love cooking for you. I like seeing you enjoy my food, seeing that smile—" I caught myself just in time and pressed my lips together. I didn’t want to slide into anything too romantic.

I’d learned that lesson already, I knew better than to cross that line too easily.

Kay stared at me for a few long seconds.

"I really do love what you cook, Rain. You always know exactly what I like," he said slowly, picking his words carefully. "And yeah, I’d definitely prefer you over Garret."

"I’m glad to hear that, Kay," I said in a solemn tone, and he smiled kinda shyly.

Adam cleared his throat, loudly enough to pull our attention back to him.

"I’m thrilled that things are going well in that department," he said. "So, final decision before I call Garret off. Rain, are you sure? And Kay, are you comfortable with him doing the cooking?"

"I’m one hundred percent sure. I’ll take care of it," I said confidently.

Kay simply nodded.

Marco gave a small huff. "Maybe we just try it out for a week. If there’s any issue, we’ll figure it out then. Sounds fair?"

Adam glanced at him. "Good idea, and Garret’s still gonna come by to clean the house either way. Just so you know, I’ll probably be out a lot, and so will Marco. We’ve got a backlog of work we really can’t ignore any longer."

"Thanks so much for everything, Adam. Marco," Kay said suddenly, serious now. "I don’t know what I would’ve done without you guys. I really appreciate all the effort you’ve put in to help me get through the worst stretch of my life."

Marco just shook his head. "It’s what we’re here for, Kay. We’re hoping things keep getting better from here on out. Even with all the police stuff going on, it’s good to see you in a better place. And with Rain stepping in, we feel better knowing you’re not alone."

Adam smiled. "Marco’s right. It had to be done, and we were glad to do it. And yeah, we feel a lot better heading back to work now that we know you’ve got Rain here."

Hearing them, I started to wonder if there was more to what they were saying than just logistics. Had they talked about it and decided it was time to take a step back, to make space for us, to let us get to know each other more intimately without them hovering around?

The timing felt a little strange. After what had happened yesterday, you’d think they’d be even more on edge about Kay’s safety. But maybe they were also connecting the dots and realizing that something deeper was happening here.

"We’ll be good," I said. "All of Kay’s needs will be taken care of."

"I’m sure they will," Adam murmured, giving me a look that said a lot more than his words.

As soon as they left, a short silence fell.

I glanced at Kay, wanting to gauge if stepping up like that and taking responsibility for him had made him even a little uncomfortable.

But I didn’t see any sign of that. His eyes were fixed on me with a strange intensity, his cheeks flushed a deep red. I could hear his heartbeat, racing, and his breathing had grown heavier.

"So, you want to be responsible for everything that… ends up inside my body?" he asked, his voice carrying a teasing, provocative lilt.

I barely managed to hold back a chuckle. That wasn’t something Kay would normally say; it was more my kind of thing. Did he have another side I wasn’t aware of?

"There’s nothing I’d want more than to have command over everything that goes into your… um, pretty pink holes."

He tilted his head slightly, a small smile tugging at the corner of hispinklips, his eyelids low, his long lashes casting shadows over his rosy cheeks.

Then, without a word, Kay set the tray aside and tossed the blanket onto the floor, sliding down to lie and spreading his legs, his lips parted, his eyes promising.

Of course, I accepted the invitation.

???

The next morning, we got up really early. Kay had trouble fully waking up, so while I drove the van, I let him lie down in the back seat and keep sleeping. He stayed out until almost 9 am, and by then, we’d already covered about a third of the distance we’d planned. When he woke up, he seemed a little disoriented and in a weird mood.
