"Yeah, while I was making yours."

The silence crept back in. I stared, trying to think of something to say. Then I remembered.

"My boss, Nathaniel, has a proposition for you. He wants an alternate skin for the app, kind of like the second set of icons you made. The client actually loved that one. He wants the whole interface redone, recolored. He asked me to see if you’d be willing to take it on. Not for free this time, of course."

Kay’s face unexpectedly lit up. Did he even make a small gasp, like a huff of relief?

"Of course, Rain! I’d love to help. And I don’t want any money. I told you, I don’t do this for that. I’ve got more than enough. I’m good for life, you know?"

His cheeks flushed as our eyes met, and he gave a soft smile.

I knew about the giant trust fund his parents had left him. He also had shares in their family company, of which Marco was the CEO now. Plus, there was the insurance from his husband’s death. Also, all the savings and the mansion Maurice had. And… Kay was the guardian of the inheritance his son would one day get from the Sanders family. The kid was set to receiveeverything, including the network of hotels the Sanderses owned.

So… really big money. I was a beggar next to him. I actually also had a trust fund, like all my brothers, but it was smaller than his, and I had to work for my monthly earnings.

A humble knight and aprince of blood.

"But it still doesn’t feel right for you to do it for free," I muttered unconvincingly.

"Isn’t your boss your cousin? Doesn’t he also employ you and one of your brothers?"

"Yeah."

"Then it’s a family business. I want to help."

Honestly, I didn’t know what to say to that. It was nice of him.

Kay hesitated, as if remembering something. I liked to watch his face when it got pensive. His lips, those sweet cherry lips, had a tendency to cutely pout then.

"Isn’t Nathaniel a burn survivor too?"

I raised my eyebrows. "Yeah, how do you know that?"

"Adam mentioned it. Said he lost his parents in a fire."

"Yeah. It was awful. Our fathers were brothers. Nathaniel survived, but he was badly burned. He was fourteen or so at the time. My parents took him in, even though he had a much older brother, Hunter, who was twenty-seven. But Hunter was on a military mission overseas and couldn’t take care of him."

"Your parents already had eight kids? How old were you back then?"

"Freshly eighteen, but I was in college already. My younger brothers, Storm and Skye, were closer to Nate’s age and hung out with him."

"How did your family… adjust? A kid with trauma, an orphan, it had to be a challenge."

"Fairly well. My youngest brother, Sun, was probably the worst toward Nate. He never got along with him. He used to call him a monster when our dad wasn’t around."

"That’s… harsh. But boys can be like that."

"Yeah, Sun’s kind of spoiled, I guess."

There was a pause.

"I’d really like to help with the graphics, Rain. I admire Nathaniel. I mean, what is he now? Twenty-two? Twenty-three? And he’s already running his own company. That’s impressive."

I nodded slowly. "He’s always been super driven and talented. He was making his own apps and mobile games as a teenager already, earning money off ads. He freelanced for a while, then started MonsterApp."

And then, without even realizing it, my hand reached out and gently brushed his hand resting by his hip.

"MonsterApp," Kay repeated quietly, eyes dropping to where our hands touched.
