"But you can bring him with you. And you even should. We can test both of you and determine if you are True Mates and to what extent the pregnancy pheromones are influencing you two. But we would like you to stay on blockers during the testing."

I looked over at Kay. He gave a slow nod.

There was one more thing I had to mention.

"There’s just one condition. My partner can’t be around alphas. His pregnancy scent is intense, and it makes them go… a little crazy. We don’t want to risk anything. I can’t agree to any tests on him done by alpha staff."

"I understand. There won’t be any alphas near him. We don’t want to disrupt his pheromone balance. I’m a beta, and my whole team is made up of betas and omegas. Alphas don’t usually go into research." There was a trace of amusement in his voice.

"Thanks," I said quietly. "So when should we come? I heard your company has a branch close by."

"We’d prefer to have you at our headquarters."

"That’s about six hours away."

"Yes, but it’s important, and all our labs are there."

I looked at Kay again. Another small nod.

"Alright. We’ll come tomorrow, if that works. Should be there around one."

"Perfect. We’ll be expecting you both."

After ending the call, I stood up, aware of Kay watching me.

"So, it’s settled. We’re taking a trip."

He didn’t say anything. His face was unreadable, thoughtful. After a beat, I added, "I’m gonna make you some breakfast, Kay."

Kay blinked and mumbled, "Okay. Thanks."

I left the room, feeling uneasy about everything. I could read him so well now, and I knew that behind that neutral face, Kay was still feeling something else entirely. This lingering melancholy. Still, I was determined to keep myself grounded for his sake. My mood would affect him, and I really didn’t want to add to the chaos.

???

Without rushing, I moved around the kitchen, putting breakfast together. I made something hearty for him, bacon, scrambled eggs, and a little tomato salad. Then I went upstairs and found him already dressed, sitting on the neatly spread blanket with his drawing tablet.

The blanket completely covered his… almost fully flattened nest. But, of course, I didn’t dare comment on it.

Kay looked a bit unsure when I showed up at the door, like he didn’t know what to say or how to act, so I brought the tray over and sat beside him on the edge of the bed.

Thatbreakthroughbetween us felt shaky, blurred a bit for now, and I honestly had no idea how to just hang out with him like it was normal, especially since the ‘no talking’ rule was off. Two weeks of near silence had really worn on me, and I felt frayed around the edges.

How was that even possible? Were we really about to havecasual, everyday conversations?

We?

That alone felt weird.

Maybe we could actually start doing things together, relaxing together, outside of just sex? The idea was tempting… and kind of stressful at the same time. The chemistry couldn’t carry everything. This was a new chapter, one where we’d actually get toknoweach other. No shortcuts.

A real test of whether we were truly compatible.

"Thanks, Rain. This looks amazing."

He started eating, and I just sat there, watching him. Honestly, I couldn’t stop looking at him, his… perfectness.

"Did you… already eat?" he asked, a little awkwardly. Clearly, he was going through the same thing, trying to figure out how to becasualafter the last three awkward weeks.
