"And who the hell are you to—"

"He mated me!" I yanked my collar aside to show him the fresh scar. "And I’m his protector now." I lifted my chin and went full dramatic. "And you’ll have to kill me before I let you question him again while he’s alone, cornered by unwanted advances, and scared."

Moor stared at the scar, jaw tight, clearly weighing his options. Kay’s face was still pressed to my chest, arms wrapped around me. I ran my fingers gently through his hair and over his back.

And then… I even leaned in and planted a kiss on top of Kay’s head.

"Fine," Moor growled. "You can stay. There’s no beta on duty today anyway. It’s Sunday. We’re short-staffed."

Marco and Adam were staring at us with their mouths open.

Satisfied with how things had turned out, I walked into the room with my arm still around Kay’s shoulders. I sat down and pulled him onto my lap. He settled on my thighs, onehand resting on my neck. The progress between us was almost overwhelming, but I welcomed it with enthusiasm.

Feeling bold, I bent forward and kissed him on the gland. That’s when I noticed something strange. The scar from my bite was the only one there… I couldn’t see his late husband’s mark anymore!

I swallowed hard. How the hell was that possible? Had Maurice’s mark just… disappeared?

I remembered seeing Kay’s glands looking pink and swollen just before I bit him. Was the old mark still there then? Or had I somehow erased it? I’d never even heard of something like that happening.

Puzzled, I glanced at Kay. He couldn’t see his own neck, of course. But could this have some kind of effect on us? Was Kay’s needy behavior somehow tied to this weird new bond we had created? It was a strong possibility, and honestly, that thought left me a little uneasy.

"So, where were we—" Moor grunted, sitting down.

"You were making some pretty inappropriate suggestions," Kay said with a bite in his voice.

Moor shot him a sharp look.

"I wouldn’t call them that. Just advice. And I meant, before that."

"I told you how Harry and Jorah insulted me, and you brushed it off. Then Harry grabbed my neck to sniff me. After that, Rain showed up—"

"Yeah, yeah. That part you’ve already told me. What happenedafterRain beat up Harry?" Moor leaned forward like a dog with a bone.

Kay hesitated. His lips trembled just slightly.

Was this guy seriously trying to ask that? I clenched my jaw and stepped in.

"We can skip that part. It’s private. After that, I said to Jorah—"

"Excuse me.I’mthe one conducting this interrogation."

"Interrogation? Is that what you’re calling this? I thought you were just taking his statement. Kay’s not a suspect; he’s a victim. And now you’re trying to force him to spill the most intimate details of an act that takes place between an omega and an alpha?"

I deliberately worded it that way, letting the words sound almost lofty.

"I already know what happened, Mr. Nolan. Jorah said that Kay presented his ass, offering you his—"

"You son of a bitch. You’re out of line. We’re done here!"

I started to get up, but Moor laughed; a cold, cutting sound.

"You put that man in the hospital, Nolan! He’s in a coma. Kay looks perfectly fine. What you’re looking at is excessive use of force and potentially life-threatening assault. You sure you want to refuse to give statements? Do you want to end up behind bars, not able to see your new mate for a long, long time?"

So that’s how it was. In their eyes,Iwas the problem. They didn’t give a damn about the attempted rape.Me.I was thecriminal. The small-town precinct wasn’t even pretending to play by the rules.

Well, Adam was kinda right, losing his mind with worry.

Kay squeezed my arm. "Rain, it’s okay. We can talk about it. Thank you for… standing up for me. But this has to happen." Then he looked at Moor. "Yeah, I acted on instinct and offered him the chance to have intercourse."
