My voice barely made it out, but he just tilted his head.
"We’re not finished. I meant it when I said you should find someone—"
"I’m not alone anymore!" I snapped.
"Oh, but you will be. When Rain ends up behind bars, you’ll need a real alpha."
His face reddened even more, and then it happened.
A low, resonant sound rumbled from his chest. The infamousAppreciation. Every alpha and omega knew it: a deep, primal sound of admiration and… sexual attraction.
"You disgusting pig!" I yelled, lurching back in my chair.
And right then, someone banged on the door.
A massive wave of relief surged through me as Moor jumped up and rushed to open it. Over his shoulder, I saw Rain’s worried face.
To me, he was a lifeline, safety embodied, always ready to help, protect, soothe…
I jumped up too, brushing past Moor’s elbow and throwing myself into Rain’s arms.
As I collapsed into his embrace, peace flooded me, washing away the misery of the last few minutes.
This was where I belonged, with the man who would protect me, no matter what.
Rain.
Could he be… mine?
My heart twisted with guilt. Half of it still clung to Maurice, refusing to let go.
But the other half… the other half had started torebel.
RAIN
The moment I felt Kay’s distress, I jumped to my feet and started banging on the door.
"Rain! What are you—" Adam started, trying to calm me down, but the door flew open with a loud bang.
Detective Moor’s bulky frame blocked the view, but I managed to catch a glimpse over his shoulder: Kay’s pale face. He rushed toward the door, slipping under the detective’s elbow, and literally collapsed into my arms, wrapping his arms tightly around me. I was stunned by how much he’d changed. He was fully trusting me now, like I really was hisprotector. A wave of happiness seized me so hard it almost knocked the breath out of my lungs.
Or… was I reading too much into this?
Maybe that was all it was: just his protector? A bodyguard. A job. Another one?
"What the hell is going on here?" I snapped, as Moor winced with visible irritation.
"Why are you interfering? I need to take his statement and—"
"You made a sound! Youknowwhat kind of sound!" Kay practically yelled.
"For God’s sake, it was involuntary! You’re pregnant; those pheromones… it just came out," Moor huffed, his voice shifting from defensive to awkwardly apologetic.
"You made a sexual sound toward my mate?" I growled low, my voice cold.
The detective rolled his eyes, clearly not taking it seriously. "Oh come on, it was just a sound. It happens. His pheromones are off the charts!"
"Then bring in a beta to take his statement if you can’t stay professional around him. He’s pregnant. He shouldn’t be stressed out like this. He needs to feel safe, and today’s already been too much for him," I barked.
