There was a short pause, and then I decided to speak up.
"I actually ran into those assholes earlier today," I said, dropping my voice a little.
"You did?" I was surprised to hear Marco’s voice. I'd almost forgotten he was still in the room. He stepped forward and locked eyes with me.
"Yeah, this morning. They were loitering near the beach, watching Adam’s house, asking around about Kay. They made some crude, suggestive comments."
The deputy gave a slow nod. "Could help show intent. Is that all you remember?"
"I think they’d been watching the house for a while. There’s a spot in the woods that looks like someone had been sitting there on a rock. Often."
Adam chimed in. "The Sanderses have enemies. They dominate the local hotel market, bought out smaller places, cornered the tourist scene. A lot of folks hate them for it. The Dawsons especially. At one local festival, when John gave a speech about donating to a public pool, they heckled the whole time."
Marco added, "Doesn’t seem like much, but those two own vacation rentals on the west side of the lake. Last year, theirplaces were half-empty while the Sanderses were fully booked. They’ve probably been stewing over it."
Kay stayed quiet, chewing his lip.
"Alright, that’s enough. I don’t see how any of that helps the current case. It’s all just speculation," the deputy said, heading toward the door. "We’ll need a full statement from you later, but since you’re… bound up, we’ll do it another time."
Deputy Johnson left, but Marco and Adam stayed behind, both looking unsettled.
"I hope the Dawsons don’t try to turn this into a civil case," Adam muttered, jaw tight.
"I'm sorry if I went too far," I said, feeling like I needed to explain myself a bit more. "I just lost control the second I saw one of them grab Kay by the neck. It was too much, I snapped."
Kay pressed his lips together, his brow tightening.
"I told you, stop apologizing. Those assholes got exactly what they deserved for what they said and tried to do. I mean it, Rain. I appreciate what you did. A lot. And I'll back you up however I can with the police," Kay said firmly.
Adam let out a tense sigh. "I’m grateful too, Rain, but you really did go too far. You could’ve scared them off; you didn’t have to turn them into pulp and bite off parts of their limbs. Stuff like this could end up causing trouble for you and separating you from Kay."
"Cut it out, Adam. You weren’t there," Kay grumbled, his voice low and angry.
"Okay, everyone just take a breath. No need to panic, Adam," Marco said calmly. "There’s a law that protects omegas during pregnancy. Even if a partner’s facing charges, they’re basically exempt from prosecution until the birth. It’s part of the Omega Protection Act. So we’ve got time to build a solid defense."
He turned to me then, his tone shifting to something more practical.
"Today’s probably too late, but tomorrow, Rain, you should call the customer support line for the suppressant you’re on. Ask if there are any rare or extreme side effects."
"Yeah, I’ll do that," I nodded, avoiding Adam’s sharp glare.
Both brothers looked like they were ready to leave, but I still had one question.
"Wait. When the knot goes down, are we heading straight to the station?"
"That’s the plan I agreed on with Deputy Johnson," Adam muttered, not quite looking at me. "But we could stall it an hour or two. No one’s gonna check if you’re still knotted."
Clearly still rattled, he turned and walked out. Marco followed him, his face thoughtful.
???
As Adam and Marco left, a wave of nerves hit me. I was about to be alone with Kay after everything that had just happened.
Would he bring back the ‘no talking’ rule?
I didn’t want to risk it, at least not yet, so I stayed quiet. My hands were still over his nipples though, and that gave me an idea. Maybe this could be a break from all the heavy conversations.
I looked into Kay’s eyes, searching, and when I felt that little spark of approval from him, I pinched his nipples between my fingers. He gasped softly. I lowered my head and took one into my mouth, sucking deep. That’s when it happened again, Kay raised his arm and touched me. This time his hand slid up my arm and into my hair, moving slowly, gently massaging. Sooo pleasant. He kept it there while I teased his nipples with my mouth.
