"But you still hope for it, don’t you?"

"I do… But magic doesn’t happen."

"It happened to me."

That hit deep. I just sat there, listening to my own breathing, not knowing what to say. Finally, I croaked out, "There’s more. I think I can feel what he’s feeling."

"Something that feels almost like telepathy?"

"Yep."

He went quiet. I heard his breathing pick up just a little. Maybe he also had an idea of what it could mean, but didn’t want to pressure me by spelling it out. After a short pause, he asked,

"Are you really attracted to him too? Like… irresistibly?"

I shrugged. "Who wouldn’t be? You’ve seen his picture. Honestly, you’re probably the only person prettier than him."

Dad laughed. "Still such a gentleman. Always flattering your old man."

"Because indeed you are beautiful like an angel, but Kay’s not far behind," I added, smiling under my breath.

I liked to give my dad those little compliments from time to time, teasing him a bit, since he was always way too humble.

"I'm sure he’s perfect," Dad answered, chuckling.

I hesitated, afraid to say it out loud. "Dad, I don’t really know him yet, and I can’t tell if I’m just getting carried away or if there’s actually something real here."

"Honey, I asked only because I know how careful you’ve been with relationships before. You’ve always taken your time to make sure it’s right. But this feels different, doesn’t it? Like… something’s pulling you?"

"Yeah. You could call it that. I just have no idea what’s behind it. It’s confusing."

There was a beat of silence, then I heard a noise in the background. My dad sighed.

"Okay, son, I have to go. Your Uncle Timothy just pulled into the driveway; he’s with Veyron. Have you heard Veyron inherited a luxury yacht from his dad’s side?"

"No, but good for him, Veyron’s cool."

"Yes, such a good kid. Anyway, I hope this whole nesting thing works itself out. And if you two really do have a high-level bond, well… those things tend to resolve themselves naturally. Keep me posted, alright?"

"I will. Take care, Dad."

"Love you. Bye."

When the call ended, I just stared out at the lake. My head felt like it was full of helium, like I was about to let out some squeaky noise of frustration.

Maybe I was just overcomplicating everything. I needed to chill, let things unfold, and stop overthinking like I always did.

Easier said than done.

KAY

The first week of Rain’s stay at my brother’s house went by without any hiccups.

He worked on his laptop while I worked on my tablet. I swam in the lake, and he jogged around it.

We slipped into a daily rhythm quickly. He knew exactly when to come to my room and still respected my request not to start any long conversations, even though, as twisted as it sounds, my hope that he’d break that rule kept growing.

Perhaps for that reason, I did let myself get a bit more involved in his dirty talk. Sometimes I even gave him a few playful replies, and I definitely stopped rolling my eyes. I just accepted it as part of his style, and since it was a chance to exchange some light, pleasant energy between us, I let it be.
