"I did, I’m sorry."

I let out a breath; it was too late now anyway. So I decided to play it down. "Doesn’t matter now, Adam. I’ll deal. Somehow. His reaction just caught me off guard."

Adam’s expression stayed serious. "I really am sorry I didn’t prepare you better. The truth is, I wasn’t sure exactly how he’d react. Definitely didn’t expect kicking and pushing; somehostility, sure, but not that. Damn. Okay, so…" He took a deep breath. "I’ll try to sort this out. Can you wait here a bit? I’ll be right back."

He jumped up and hurried off toward the house. I was actually relieved to get a little more time to calm down and figure out what the hell I was supposed to do next. Was I overreacting? Maybe. But honestly, Adam hadn’t said a word about Kay potentially lashing out at me.

Had that asshole just… baited me into this?

Yeah, he’d emphasized that Kay didn’t want to be friends, didn’t want tenderness, affection, or small talk. I had braced myself for someone distant, maybe even cold. But angry?

Kay had a list of rules that were relayed to me: no kissing on the lips, no endearments, he wouldn’t give blowjobs, and definitely wouldn’t ride my dick. Basically, just a pillow prince. I could handle that, no problem. But what happened today went far beyond that.

And to be completely honest, it wasn’t just his attitude that threw me off balance. There was something else I wasn’t ready to say out loud: the strange, perfectly timed orgasm we had, and everything I’d heard about the magic tied to moments like that.

Not wanting to dwell on it any longer, I let my eyes wander across the shoreline and the lake’s glistening surface, soaking in the peaceful view and letting it help clear my head.

About twenty minutes passed before Adam came back, a bit flushed in the face.

"I talked to him again," he said.

"And?"

"I wanted to make sure everyone’s on the same page. I told him what you told me, that you’ve only been in serious relationships and that you can’t just… get up and leave like an escort. That this wasn’t what you expected."

"What did he say?"

Adam let out a breath. "He said you can stay with him for up to half an hour after sex, if you need to. You can hold him. But he still doesn’t want to talk, that and the other conditions haven’t changed."

I sighed. "Okay… And what about meals? Breakfast, dinner? The time in between. Will there still be… silence? No contact?"

"He eats in his room. We bring the food to him there. It’s been that way since Maurice died. He stays holed up, only going out to walk or swim in the lake to keep his body in shape. You won’t have contact with him outside of the moments when you have sex. So. Is that something you can handle?"

Taking a deep breath, the kind that marks a turning point, I said, "Yeah."

Now Adam let out a heavy sigh of relief.

"Phew… Thank you, Rain! This means a lot. He’s already calmer. He’s reading a book now instead of curling up in bed like he usually does. We just want him to have a little peace for once…" His voice wavered, and I glanced over at him.

They really were deeply invested in this. As betas, Adam and Marco couldn’t have children. The child their only omega brother carried would be their sole heir, someone they were desperate to protect. They came from old money, a wealthy family with a long legacy. Marco, the oldest by two years over Adam and five over Kay, was already CEO of the family business. I figured they probably wanted to make sure their family wealth didn’t end up in the hands of their obnoxious alpha cousins.

Stretching out my back, I slowly stood.

"This is all… intense. I’m kind of all over the place right now, so I’d appreciate it if you could show me to my room. I need to unpack and take another shower. My head’s spinning, but I’ve got to make some updates to the app I’m working on."

"Still full-time with Nathaniel’s startup?"

"Yeah. Almost ten months now."

After leaving my previous job at the same corpo where my ex-husband still worked, I was now employed at my cousin’s small software company, and I still had to finish the task he’d asked me to handle today.

Adam gave me a thoughtful look and nodded. As we headed back inside, we passed Marco standing in the kitchen area, staring at us with unreadable eyes. We didn’t exchange any words. A few minutes later, I was finally in my new room, grateful for a little quiet.

The room had a window overlooking the tranquil lake, and for a while, I just stood there, zoning out and watching the water.

The conversation with Adam had helped a bit, but I was still far from calm. Everything that had happened today… it was a lot. A massive shift in my life.

My phone buzzed. A new message.
