Adam glanced at me with wide-open eyes.
Marco shook his head in disbelief. "Again?! Rain, seriously, thank you for being there. You’re a hero, man. Three, huh?"
I shrugged. I wasn’t in the mood to preen.
All I wanted was to leave the room. As quickly as possible.
"So that’s where the cut on your forehead came from!" Adam muttered, looking a little emotional. "And those on your hands?"
Since I remained silent, he turned toward his younger brother.
"Kay, you shouldn't walk around in public during a peak wave."
Kay groaned and pouted. "Don’t even start. I know. But I was busy processing the bombshell we got at Malden Pharmaceuticals."
"So what did they tell you?" Adam blinked and asked, clearly relieved to leave the previous topic behind. The tension still hung in the room, thick like smoke.
There was a pause. A beat, just long enough to feel dramatic.
"The news is…" Kay sighed. "We're True Mates."
The silence was intense. And long. And very… uneasy.
Honestly, I expected… I don’t know, more excitement?
But nothing. Adam and Marco just stood there, like Kay had told them the end of the world was coming. Adam’s mouth dropped open, and Marco looked like he’d just seen a ghost.
What the hell was wrong with these people? Everywhere else in the world, news like that was treated like a fest, a reason to celebrate, to jump for joy! But here? All three brothers took the news like a damn invitation to a wake!
"Say that again?" Marco asked quietly.
"We’re True Mates. Don’t you think that explains a lot?" Kay leaned back on the couch, crossing his arms over his chest.
His brothers stared at him, gaping.
"Just let that sink in," Kay added, raising an eyebrow. "Let it… marinate!" He waved his hands around like he was casting a spell, but Marco just frowned at his little performance.
"This isn’t a joke. This is… huge, Kay. That’s a hell of a surprise."
Kay snorted. "You don’t say! All the weird stuff from the last two and a half weeks? We blamed it on the blockers. But it turns out, the answer was maybe harder to believe, but simpler."
Adam blinked a few times, then finally said, "Kay… fuck. I’m stunned. And weirdly… not that stunned. I think part of me always suspected it, way in the back of my mind. Seeing you two together just made sense to me. Like pieces of a damn puzzle coming together!"
Marco still seemed oddly restless. He suddenly got up and walked over to the patio doors, staring out.
"This really is an incredible thing. And by the way, it totally solves the problem with the Dawsons. They can't touch us now. True Mates are, in a way, above the law," he said solemnly.
He tapped his fingers against the glass, gazing into the garden. Then he suddenly turned toward us, smiling in slight bafflement.
"Well… congratulations!"
Adam was the next to respond. He leaned in, hugging his younger brother and kissing his cheek.
Kay remained stiff.
"Kay, I’m thrilled for you. I really am! This clears up so many things. It’s amazing news for you two, right? Really amazing, but—" he paused, "how are you feeling about it, Kay?"
The question, for reasons I couldn’t put into words, made me feel even more tired and discouraged.
