I had to step in. "We're on the way home. We don't have the best circumstances to deal with this, officer," I said with a raspy voice, even though we both knew we could have handled it better.
I could see Kay's lips tighten. He must've felt guilty.
"It's your duty to handle it and not become a public nuisance!"
"You're out of line, officer. Kay can't control when the waves hit, and that doesn't justify their behavior!"
Another policeman approached us. "We can review the camera recordings now. The clerk has access."
We all followed him to the back room.
On the monitor, we saw ourselves near the chiller, the alphas approaching. Kay took a step back, and I pulled him behind me. Then I grabbed a bottle, spread my arms, and threw it at one of their faces.
"Looks like you were the first to attack," the cop said, smirking. "No fighting mode! You initiated the physical altercation. That might be enough for a case."
"You didn’t hear what they said! One of them said that after they were done with my boyfriend, they’d come for me. And that it’s good I’m pregnant, because I’d be wetter!" Kay hissed.
The officer didn’t even blink. Only the clerk stared at us, clearly fascinated. A one-against-three alpha fight probably wasn’t something he saw every day around here.
The rest of the recording wasn’t doing the alphas any favors. It was clear I was defending myself against all three. Blades flashed in the air. The footage cut off as the first cop arrived. They must’ve been really close to the gas station.
"But you did start the physical part," one of them grumpily mumbled.
All three of them stood there, watching, but I could tell they were uncomfortable. Kay’s scent was thick in the air now.
"I’m not stupid. You really think I’d go after three alphas with knives without being threatened?" I asked, trying to compose myself.
"You can feel my scent, right? Think they couldn’t? And they weren’t exactly subtle about it!" Kay muttered.
"Like I said, you should’ve dealt with this in the back of your van. It’s big enough," the officer growled.
"Kay didn’t know when the wave would hit. We were already in the store," I said.
He cut me off. "Don’t lie. The clerk’s an omega. He said that the moment Mr. Sanders walked in, the whole place was filled with his fragrance."
I snorted. "So what? It started on the way here. We can’t just have sex in public, on the sidewalk!"
"You should’ve gone back to the car. It’s got tinted windows."
"The hell we should have. You don’t get to tell us what to do. What shouldn’t be happening is treating a pregnant omega like this, putting the unborn baby in danger, and scaring his dad like that!" I raised my voice.
I caught Kay’s gaze, and felt it through the Bond. He was… surprised by my fierce defense. Moved, even.
The cop was about to fire back when the door opened and a short omega in his fifties walked in, brow furrowed.
"Mr. Sanders? I’m Norman Miller from the Agency."
He walked up to us, and Kay immediately handed him our True Mates certificate.
"Thanks for coming. I’m Kay Sanders, and this is my boyfriend, Rain Nolan. I was threatened with gang rape by three local alphas, and my mate defended me," Kay said.
Miller’s nostrils flared. "You’re pregnant."
"Yes. I got hit by a wave here. Does our True Mate status help if the police try to separate us?"
"It wouldn’t even matter. An omega in pregnancy can’t legally be separated from his partner. The cops know that. It’s the law."
The officer growled. "You people always get in the middle of our business. He attacked them first!"
