Dr. Darren raised his hands slightly. "All I’m saying is, consider all pros and cons—"

"Is it safe?"

Dr. Darren opened a drawer, pulled something out, and stood up.

"Yes, very safe. Just a few short-term, mild side effects. Here’s the list. We don’t have an official insert yet; it’s just the lab report printout. I’d be grateful if you could let us know if anything feels off."

We were both silent for a moment before he added, "None of the test subjects had serious issues. Some felt a little tingling in the glands or a temporary sense of passivity, but that’s it. They all took it under supervision, and we monitored their vitals closely. Everything was fine."

I sighed and sat up straighter. "Alright, give it to me. The Dawsons may be unpredictable once they hear the news." Aside from that, I was really curious about what Kay’s Allure smelled like. It was still a mystery to me. Even the mere thought made me instinctively smile, but I had Kay’s reaction in the back of my mind, so my smile faded almost immediately. Kay didn’t even look up.

Dr. Darren popped a pill from the blister pack, and I took it quickly.

"Great. Now… did you bring your gas bills? We’d like to cover your expenses."

Kay stood. "There’s no need. Thank you for your help, Dr. Darren. It was nice to meet you."

"Likewise, likewise!" Darren said, hesitating for a moment, eyeing us intently. "Can I just say… you two make a stunningcouple. Like, movie-star level. You’re both so lucky to have found your True Mate, and that he turned out so handsome!"

"Yeah… truly lucky indeed. Thank you, Dr. Darren. We’ll be on our way," Kay muttered and turned to leave.

I nodded to the doctor and followed Kay. We walked out to the exit in complete silence. As we passed the entrance, I noticed the sign still lying against the wall. I picked it up and brought it back to the guard’s booth. When I got to the car, Kay was already inside, sitting in the back seat, for some reason, like he didn’t want to be next to me on the drive.

I started the engine and pulled into traffic.

"Want to stop somewhere and grab a bite before we hit the highway?"

"No," came the curt reply from behind me.

I glanced in the rearview mirror. His eyes were red. There was nothing I could say that wouldn’t make things worse. Kay was clearly on edge, and I just knew that he didn’t want to talk.

Soon, I turned onto the highway ramp. The next two hours passed in continuous silence. I felt… hollow. Beaten. I never imagined he’d take such good news this badly. I expected a little unease, but shutting down completely?

Did he really think I wasreplacingMaurice?

Soon, I noticed his wave had started.

His pheromonal scent was stronger now. On top of that, I was picking up on things I hadn’t noticed before. At first, it was subtle, but soon it gradually intensified. A sweet, intoxicating scent started to fill the car, and I suddenly realized Kay’s natural Allure wasn’t that vanilla tone I’d sensed when we first met. That was simply part of his pregnancy fragrance.

His real scent was different, and it was pushing through now, a sharp, beautiful mix of jasmine and lime blossom. The citrusy edge was at the same time fresh and dizzying, growing stronger by the minute.

It was obvious now. The Seprudin 1000 was clearing out of my bloodstream while we were driving. And to make matters worse, we were stuck in a small, closed space. As a result, I was fully exposed to the rising power of Kay’s Allure, and it was overwhelming my senses. The scent breathed into my nose, sank into my pheromonal receptors, and made me shiver slightly all the time, like I had a fever.

That was it.

We were definitely True Mates.

His Allure was the perfect counterpart to mine, like two puzzle pieces snapping into place. I realized Kay must have picked up on mine too, and probably way more intensely since he was in a wave. If it felt even half as good to him as it did to me, he must’ve had incredible willpower to act like nothing was happening.

I knew I couldn’t say anything bitter or resentful. If I showed my feelings now, my hurt, it would just come off as petty. I wanted him to open up, but seriously, how fast could anyonereplace their husband? I had to wait for him to decide, for him to reach for me. If I pushed too hard, I could lose him.

As we merged onto the interstate, I looked at him again in the mirror. Kay’s face was unreadable, eyes fixed on the window. His cheeks were flushed, lips tight. I knew he was fighting arousal.

I waited. And waited.

Fifteen minutes. Twenty. Forty. Still nothing. His cheeks were deeply pink, lips red, eyes a little glassy, but he kept resisting. I’d read somewhere that a pregnancy wave could drag on for over two hours if unresolved.

Feeling bad for him, I asked softly, carefully, trying not to put any pressure on him, "Kay… do you need me?"
