Holy shit, what was happening?

Courtland paused at the door. “Will you be okay?”

I nodded. “Yes. Now go!”

I didn’t have to tell him twice. He was gone in an instant. I juggled the babies as I walked toward Bonnie’s bed again. I was hopeful that the girl was onto something, because I needed Bonnie back now.

The cubs continued to fuss, and I rocked them both as well as I could.

“Do you want a hand?” I jumped at the voice, and spun to see the young blond guy was still in the corner. “Sorry, didn’t mean to scare you. I’m Bohdie, by the way. No one introduced us.” He sauntered forward, and I could tell he was a shifter of some sort. “I’m good with babies, but shit with science. So if you need a hand, I could help?”

He smelled like an Alpha, but his face was open and friendly. My Beast said he wasn’t a threat, and I really could use the help.

I passed him Gabriel. “Thank you. I’m Pryce.”

He held the cub with ease, and the baby quieted immediately. “My mate is an Omega. She’s good with kids too. Her name is Enit and she’s the most beautiful woman in the world.” I smiled at that, because it was obvious he loved her.

For the next three hours, Bohdie told me about his life, mostly about his mate, and I think I made a new friend, all while Maxton was going to hell around us.

Imade myself come back to work, otherwise my brain just fixated on Bonnie. On my mistakes. On a future without her. So instead, I chose to lose myself in endless fucking paperwork. Anything to keep my mind off her.

Courtland still hadn’t arrived, but he was taking Pryce to sit with Bonnie, and his first appointment wasn’t for another three hours. The amount of people who wanted his time had lessened over the last week, and I wasn’t sure if it was because word had gotten around about Bonnie, or because he’d fixed all the problems that people had been festering over for the last decade.

Courtland didn’t say no to a worthy request. He didn’t heckle over funds either, after talking to accounting. Turns out, Maxton was rich as fuck due to some good investments in property and oil in the early twentieth century. You wouldn’t have known it from the previous Alpha General though. That guy had kept a tight fist on the money, probably because he still believed in survival of the fittest.

But when I thought of all the times Bonnie had gone without just so she could feed and clothe the kids in the Sanctum, while we’d had funds to keep it well-resourced for a century, well, that made me impossibly angry. I was glad that old fuck was dead.

My phone rang, and I heaved a sigh as I answered it. “Alpha General's office.”

“Fuck, Radic, thank god it’s you. Something is wrong with Elizabeth.” I recognized the voice of John Fairweather, and he was not a man prone to exaggeration.

“What happened?”

“She just collapsed. She was changing out the spark plugs on old Tom’s ATV and then she just keeled over. Hit her head pretty bad and made it bleed. She isn’t waking up and I can’t get hold of Doc.”

Cold fear washed over me. “I’ll find him right away, John. I’ll get him sent up.”

I hung up the phone, but no sooner had I put it down, the phone rang again. I dragged it back to my ear.

“Hello?”

“Radic, it’s Quinn.” Why the fuck would one of Wilkie’s Betas be calling me? And why was he whispering?

“What's wrong?”

“It’s Susannah,” he whispered, and I could hear the fearful tremble in his voice. “She won’t wake up. And she smells wrong, and Wilkie is being weirder than normal, and the guys are acting fucking crazy and I don’t know what to do.”

Fuck. Fuck, fuck, fuck. “Are you safe?”

“Yeah, I barricaded myself in her room and I’ll hold them back, but I don’t know what's wrong.”

Shit, I didn’t know what was wrong either. “I’ll send someone up to get you guys out right now, okay? Someone will sort out Wilkie, and we’ll bring Susannah down to the infirmary to get her checked out. Hold on.”

I hung up again, and called Murphy and Merrick. Murphy answered his phone on the first ring with a grunt. “Murphy, it's Radic.” I lowered my voice so no one could hear. “Something is wrong with Susannah. I need you to go and extract her from Wilkie’s Pack. Quinn too.”
