Istepped out of the shower and realized I had fifteen missed calls. Five from Radic, and another ten from Darius and his Pack. I’d barely shimmied into a dress when Darius came barreling into the house.
“Bonnie!”
I rushed from the bedroom and into the entrance foyer. “Darius, what’s wrong?”
“There’s been a challenge to the Alpha General’s position!”
My gasp echoed around the foyer. “Who?”
Corvin, Darius’s Alpha, came up behind his Omega. “A stranger. The brother of Naja from the Huxley-Grey Pack.”
A stranger. What the hell?
With that, my phone rang again. Radic. I grabbed my phone out of my dress pocket and answered it. “Rad! Are you okay?”
“I’m fine, Bon. It’s all okay.”
I let out a relieved whoosh of breath. “It’s true though?”
He made an affirmative sound. “Mm, yes. I need a favor. Is the Wiley-Fletcher-Reid Pack there?”
Because everyone had insane hearing, Corvin answered. “Yeah, we came straight here, just in case it was a less peaceful challenge.”
My heart felt too full of gratitude for this Pack who’d taken my crusade and made it their own. I gave Corvin a grateful look, as Radic made another relieved noise. “That’s good, because Bonnie, I need a favor, but you don’t have to do it. I don’t want you to do anything that makes you feel uncomfortable.”
I frowned. “What is it?”
“I need you to come down to the Doc’s office. The, uh, challenger for Alpha General has some kids with him—mostly teenagers, but a couple of babies. Doc wanted to know if you could please come down and give him a hand.”
I’d done a rudimentary nursing degree because Doc was the only medical treatment in the area, and I figured it pretty much went hand-in-hand with my role at the Sanctum. Besides, if I was going to be a spinster, at least I’d be an invaluable one.
“Is it safe?” I asked, though I knew better. Radic would never endanger me, even if his life depended on it.
He said as much in his next breath. “You know I would never ask you to do this if I thought you’d come to any harm, Bonnie.”
I rolled my eyes at myself because I did know that. “I’ll be there in a minute. I’ll see if Darius can stay with the kids.” I turned to Darius and Corvin, raising my eyebrows hopefully, and they both nodded.
“Thanks, baby. I’ll see you in a minute. Love you, Bon.”
“You too. See you soon.”
I hung up and gathered everything I thought I’d need. I grabbed two of the infant seats, just in case, and Corvin installed them in my van. I checked all the kids, who were still immersed in the cartoon I’d put on before having a shower.
Finally, Darius shooed me out the door. “I’ve got this, Bonnie. Take care of yourself.”
Corvin met me at the driver’s door. “We’ll set ourselves up here for as long as you need. Call us if you need anything, Bonnie. Anything. We’re all quite fond of you, and you’re one of Darius’s closest friends.”
I gave him a quick hug. “Thanks. I honestly don’t know what I did before you guys.” I climbed into the driver’s seat, giving Corvin a quick wave as he shut the door. My mind whirled as I made the drive down the dirt roads to town. I tried to wrack my brain for gossip about the new female Omega and her family. Naja had been pulled from obscurity in a town near the base of the mountains. She’d been on the run, and then someone had breached our wards and stolen her. Rumors about that had been rife in town for weeks now, about how the Convocation had stepped in and rescued her with the help of some long-lost brother. He’d come to the cubs’ presentation but hadn’t spoken to anyone.
But that was it. I knew nothing about him, and if I had to guess, neither did anyone else. I’d met Naja though, and she was lovely. Gatlin, the Alpha from the Huxley-Grey Pack, was the son of the current Alpha General, but was nothing like his father. He often donated stuff to the Sanctum, like cribs and highchairs that he’d built himself. Plus, their Omega and Beta always cooked Christmas dinner for the kids and dropped it off. They were good people.
There was no one on the streets in Maxton right now, and it was an odd sight. What the hell had happened to send people running back home like this? I pulled up to the front of the Doc’s office and climbed out. No one was on the sidewalk, or waiting in line at the commissary. So weird.
I pushed the door open to the Doc’s office, and seven men turned around. Holy shit. My feet stilled as my eyes automatically bounced to the Alpha in the room. I gasped and took a step back. His power was like a hand around your throat, where you were scared but a little excited all at once. His eyes were as black as pitch, and he had a few days of growth along his jaw, giving him a villainous look. He held my eyes like a snare, until Radic appeared between us. He wrapped me in his arms, and I hugged him back.
Pulling away, he gave me a meaningful look with his eyes. I think it was reassuring. “Bonnie, may I introduce you to the De Léon Pack. This is their Alpha, Courtland. His Beta, Dominic. Uh, the rest of these guys are their friends, I think.”
I looked at the Beta, but my nose told me he wasn’t Manix. Some kind of shifter though. I tilted my head, and he tilted his right back at me, his eyes laughing as much as the skull tattoo that wrapped around his throat. “Wolf, little Beta. I’m a wolf shifter.”
