“I’ll do that,” Roqs said, standing up. “For sure the Council would want a detailed account of what happened down to the menu we were eating. I’ll take care of it, Zirc.”
I acknowledged him with a nod.Knowing Roqs, he will leave the details about Brin and how she is fully immune to the Shura. Even the little fact that for some reason, I can also partially move my body faster than any who survived being blasted with the Shura.
“With Nialla wounded, maybe our forces can put their strategies into action,” Crix mused. “This is the perfect time. I will inform my spies about this and see if they can sniff out their plans.”
Crix was concerned that part of the Council’s plan was to eradicate the Five Hordes by sacrificing many manasties. Our population is the smallest in this part of the galaxy. The Council is currently divided. One half thinks that for us to survive, we can sacrifice some to eradicate the horde. But the other half believes that in doing so, we might kill off half the mated pairs. Our population growth is very sparse. There are only very few mated pairs who can produce offspring even if there are still many female eggs in The Chamber. To balance the odds, all tribes are finding ways on how to counteract the Shura.
I looked at Brin and thought maybe, just maybe, she holds the key to that.
Chapter 2
MATE BUSINESS
Zirc
“What did you say?” I said in a quiet voice. The room’s temperature dropped a little. I’m not surprised. I saw the way Volks’ body tensed up. Though quiet and a bit shy, he acts like he is the guard and protector of their triad. He is their muscle man. They said they are not mates, but we’ve known them for years. I think, to spare my feelings with Roqs, they do not declare that these three are mates in body, mind and spirit. It’s more an open secret. Yet, they did not go to the Council for a female egg to fertilize. Maybe they are not yet ready for children.
It's been two days since we all gathered again. Crix is almost present most of the time checking on her vitals. Jigen, not so much but Volks. He just arrived today. I haven’t left Brin’s side at all. There is still no sign of Coone.
Roqs remains lax at my side but I know he is on alert. We are friends with these males. That is why I’m thinking he is preparing to stop me if I and Volks come to blows. A common occurrence. But what is not common is how I react to any single thing that concerns Brin.
Crix cleared his voice. I realized two things. I was holding my sword that was resting at my side. Two, I am glaring at Volks.
The fuck is happening to me? I forced myself to release the sword and place it, this time, behind my back. I paced so that I’m not glaring at anyone.
“These are the facts, Zirc. I more than triple checked my data because I knew you are going to react this way. Brynn is designed as a first class slave. A licensed companion that is worth millions! Let’s hope that no one, like a pirate, is out looking for her.”
I growled low.
That is right. I was not happy when the only time I closed my eyes, I woke up to Crix’s shocked face when he stripped her. He said his purpose was to collect some ‘samples’ to see how potent their sperm was. It is a good thing that I and my beast were too shocked to react fast. Crix is not just a brilliant scientist, he is also very wise and took that opportunity to escape. I almost transformed to my beast. But I caused damage that we had to transfer to their hospital ward that is not occupied.
I am not surprised he shared this findings to his mates that Brin is a female of her kind. And Volks is now present. I’m sure his beast does not feel happy with me almost endangering his mate.
“Or a bounty hunter,” Roqs supplied.
“You are not helping!” Volks threw a piece of paper at him. And beyond them, Brin is resting. This room has a lot of medical devices that bring a shiver to my spine. Only the Purple and Red tribes enjoy touching and creating them.
“But it’s the truth! I found traces of a serum that makes her -”
“- That information is top secret!” I cut in a voice as sharp as my sword.
They paused. I know what they are thinking. Why am I not reporting this to the council?
“The council only wants the relic I found.”
“The council does not like secrets, Zirc. You should know that! You work for them,” Jigen explained.
“Exactly.” I drew nearer to the three. I placed my hand on top of a nearby table. “When they do, I will never see her again.”
“You do not know that,” Jigen insisted. “All you need to do is register her. All it requires is an eye scan and a small prick of blood.”
Crix gasped. “They can’t!”
Now Jigen and Volks are staring at their mate.
I straightened up and placed my arms in front of me. Roqs remained seated in one of the stools near me. I’m not sure if he’s aware there’s a dead body behind him. The antiseptic does not completely mask its scent. Most likely another cadaver for Crix and Jigen to analyze. Hopefully, they placed Brin in an environment that will not expose her to any viruses. Lately, there has been reported cases of mysterious deaths in the Purple Tribe. The numbers are still small so it’s not yet a cause for alarm.
“She has iron blood.”
