“Oh, you’re finally awake.” Xac stood at the foot of my bed. “Can’t kill the wicked, I guess.”
I gave them a sarcastic laugh. “Seriously, though, the rest of the team is okay? What about Vawn?”
“We’re all fine. Just glad we don’t have to scout another cocky center to replace you.” Xac twisted my toe, one of the only free parts of my body. “And as for Vawn, he’s going to be okay.”
“Going to be?” What in the stars had happened to him?
“Yeah.” Xac shrugged as Qé kept a hand on my chest. “I guess he passed out when he thought you’d died in the crash. But now he’s dealing with an unrelated issue.”
I shoved Qé’s hand away and started yanking off equipment. “I need to see him now.”
They both pushed me back into bed as alarms from the medical equipment beeped over and over. But I fought them. No matter what was wrong with me, I needed to make sure, for myself, that Vawn was okay.
Medical staff rushed in, trying to hold me down as well. But I couldn’t relax until I saw him. Why didn’t they understand that?
Something sharp pierced my neck. Coldness ran through my veins before I lost all feeling in my body. Couldn’t move. Couldn’t even talk to tell them all off. But I could see them. I’d make sure they all paid for not letting me see my boyfriend, the guy I wanted to commit to for the rest of my life. I blinked, wanting to scream, but when I opened my eyes again, the room was in complete darkness, and my head throbbed.
“Are you always this stubborn?”
I blinked again at the sound of Vawn’s voice. Everything was still dark, but I was certain I’d heard him.
“Vawn? Are you there, or am I dreaming?” I tried to reach out, but my wrists were confined.
“I’m here. Though, I’m sure you were dreaming only moments ago with the way you were twitching and moaning in your sleep. Must have been a good sedative they gave you.”
That explained the headache. “But why can’t I see anything?”
“Because your eyes are closed.” He chuckled before I felt his light touch on my shoulder. “Just kidding. The lights are off. Let me turn them on for you.”
As a faint glow filled the room, I saw my boyfriend standing by the control panel. Finally, I knew he was okay.
“Is this bright enough? Too bright?” He held his hand in front of the panel, waiting for me to respond.
“Perfect.” I tried to reach out to him to get him to come to me, but I was still confined. “Now, can you get over here and help me out of this contraption? I want to hold you.”
He stepped toward me then paused, his gaze shifting to the floor. “There’s something I need to tell you.”
My stomach twisted at his tone. What could possibly make him sound so sad and scared? “Okay, but please, at least, remove the constraints from my wrists.”
He pressed a button on the side of my bed but still looked ready to cry.
Once my wrists were free, I reached for him, ignoring the pain in my shoulder. It was worth it to have that contact with my boyfriend again. “What is it that you have to tell me?”
A commotion erupted from the doorway. Before Vawn had a chance to say anything, in walked the rest of my team and Utahn.
“Did you tell him yet?” Ret leaned against the wall with his arms crossed.
“He just woke up.” Vawn wiped his eyes. “I was about to, but then you all walked in.”
I glanced around at everyone’s impatient stares. “Does everyone know but me? What happened? Am I dying?”
“Well, we all start dying the moment we’re created.”
“Shut up, Genj,” the others chorused.
“It’s not you.” Vawn lightly squeezed my hand. “I’m pregnant.”
“What?” That was not the news I expected to hear. Far from it.
