When I woke in the morning, I was alone, Vawn’s warmth long gone. Though his scent still lingered. With any other sexual partner, I would have been relieved to find they’d left in the middle of the night, but for some reason, I felt a strange yearning to see the sexy omega again.
I got out of bed and found a pair of shorts to put on. I tied my hair up then walked out into the common room, hoping to see him there.
The rest of my teammates were already awake, drinking their mugs of tabrue, a hangover remedy, while lounging on the furniture.
I glanced around for Vawn but didn’t see him anywhere.
Genj came over and handed me a mug. “He’s already headed home.”
My stomach twisted, and a lump formed in my throat. “Why?” I managed to whisper. Had I hurt him somehow?
Qé snorted then shook their head with a smile. “Never thought I’d see the day when Ojokun caught feelings for someone.”
“There’s no feelings,” Ret and I said at the same time.
I paused though, taking a deep breath, not sure if I really meant those words. Did I have any affection for the brother of two of my teammates? Feelings that went beyond sexual attraction? I didn’t know, but I wouldn’t say no to another night with him.
“He’s gone, and he’s not coming back.” Ret took his mug over to the sanitizer. “That’s all you need to know. Guess you weren’t even a good fuck with how fast he dashed out of here.”
I squeezed the mug in the same way it felt like vises squeezed my chest. I knew his words were meant to hurt, but when I returned to my room and didn’t find anything of Vawn’s left behind, not even a note, I wondered if Ret was right. Was I that forgettable?
Chapter Five
Vawn
“What in the universe would ever possess you to book a vacation to Rennir?” I gaped at my best friend, still baffled by the news he’d shared. “You know that planet is where singles and cheaters go only to fuck.”
“I’ve heard of people who met their future partner there.” Utahn pouted, giving me a sad look.
I side-eyed him. “You’ve got to be kidding me.”
He sighed and leaned back on the couch. “I guess I’m just tired. Tired of failed relationships, and tired of pining for someone who’s never coming back.”
I moved closer to him and rubbed his arm. “I know, but do you really think Rennir is the right place? I know you. You catch feelings too fast.”
“I know.” He leaned over and rested his head on my lap. “But you’ve been happier since you returned from Eurebly, had that one-night stand with that space racer. I thought it would help me if I did the same thing.”
My chest clenched. I wasn’t happy. I was miserable, but I’d tried extremely hard to hide it. Running my fingers through his hair, I exhaled. “Ut, I did catch feelings. That’s why I don’t want you to go.”
“What?” He sat up and stared at me with wide eyes. “When did this happen? Why didn’t you tell me?”
I shrugged. “I knew it would never amount to anything, and I didn’t want to get hurt.” Leaning my head back, I closed my eyes for a brief moment. But it only made me think of him. “I don’t know the exact moment it happened, but after we fucked for the whole night, he held me tight against him. It was then I knew I was in trouble. Because I wanted more. I craved more time with him. So, I waited until he was asleep then snuck out of his room. I didn’t care that my brother was fucking someone when I went in to collect my stuff because I knew I had to get out of there.”
“Genj?” Utahn whimpered.
“No, Ret.” I rolled my eyes. Okay, maybe Utahn did need to go to Rennir. My brother was as unavailable to him as Ojokun was to me. He’d likely have a better chance at finding a loving relationship on that planet than pining over a space racer like we both already were.
I released a heavy breath. “Fine, I get it. Go, and have fun. If you find someone, great! If not, at least make sure you get laid.”
Utahn grabbed my hands. “Come with me.”
I wrinkled my face. “Ut, I can’t exactly drop everything to go bed hopping with you for a week. I have obligations I can’t walk away from. I need time to plan all that.”
“Yes, you can come.” He slapped his palms on my thigh. “I booked a beach house ’cause I didn’t want to stay in a hotel and hear all my neighbors fucking. You can bring Enif with us. And you can bring any work you have to do as well. It won’t be any different there than if you did it here. You don’t have anything due for a while anyway. I checked.”
I pinched his arm. “You planned this, didn’t you? Booked the whole thing knowing exactly how I’d react.”
Utahn pressed his lips together and looked everywhere but at me. Though I could see the smirk on his face. “Maybe.”
