“So what do you want to do today, kiddo?” I ask. “We have the whole day to ourselves.”

Alice’s eyes light up as she finishes up her breakfast. “Can we go to the park, Daddy? I want to play on the swings.”

“Sure thing, let me just clean up here, and we’ll head out soon.”

Monday arrives quickly, and I am nervous as I watch Catherine’s silver sedan pull into our driveway. Alice is practically bouncing with elation as I open the door to welcome our new nanny.

Catherine steps out of her car, looking spectacular in a knee-high red dress and white sneakers. I’m momentarily stunned by her beauty but shake it off, reminding myself that she’s here to take care of Alice.

Alice squeals with delight when she sees Catherine and runs to hug her.

“Alice, why don’t you show Catherine your morning routine while I get her stuff out of the trunk?” I suggest.

“Come on, Catherine,” Alice says, tugging her hand toward the staircase.

“Thanks,” Catherine whispers to me.

Alice practically drags Catherine inside the house to finish getting ready for school. I’m glad to see the two of them bonding already. I feel like I’ve finally done something right as a father for the first time in a while.

I walk over to Catherine’s car and pop open the trunk. Inside, there is a mound of boxes piled up against each other. Immediately, I’m full of regret for offering to take all of this up myself.

I grab what appears to be the lightest box, only for it to be heavy. I let out a big exhale as I trudge the box into the house, reminding myself that I’m doing this for Alice as motivation to get me through this long morning.

“What do you have in this thing, Catherine?” I ask as I walk through the front door.

“Uh, none of your business,” she responds. “I can take it up to my room if you show me where that is.”

“No, I got it. Come on, Alice. Let’s show Catherine to her new room.”

“Come on, Catherine,” Alice says as she drags Catherine up the stairs. I walk the box up the stairs and set it in Catherine’s room.

“This is nice. Thank you.”

“Only the best for our nanny,” I say.

Catherine smiles.

I head back downstairs and out the door to retrieve the rest of her things from her trunk.

“Okay. Everything is in your room now, Catherine.”

“Thanks, Oliver.”

“Daddy, you look tired,” Alice giggles.

“I’m exhausted. How about we get a snack?”

“Yay!” Alice shouts. “But I need to pee first.”

Catherine is looking around the room and rummaging through her boxes.

“Do you need help?”

“No, I’ve got it.” She picks up a box, sets it down, then trips over another one. She rams right into my chest, and we both fall to the ground with her landing on top of me.

“Can’t you be more careful?” I ask. Catherine pushes herself up with her hands on my chest. Our eyes meet, and I see a spark of something in hers. I never noticed how lovely her green eyes were before.

Just then, I hear the bathroom door open. I quickly push her off me, and we stand up.
