Fred breaks into a big smile. “Congrats, buddy.”

“Congrats to you two,” Catherine adds. “Proposing in the Bahamas during your three-year-anniversary. I still can’t believe Oliver didn’t clue me in.”

I shrug. “I couldn’t allow you to accidentally slip it to my sister.”

Catherine rolls her eyes and smacks my arm playfully. “You’re lucky I love you.”

I chuckle and give her a hug. “Come on, guys. We’re going to do the cake soon.”

“Oliver,” my mother calls out. When I turn toward the patio, she’s crossing over to us with a mojito in tow.

My mother’s eyes sparkle with joy when she glances at Catherine’s baby bump. She puts down her mojito and envelops both of us in a big hug. “Oh, my dear, congratulations on your pregnancy. You must be so excited to welcome this little one into the world.”

Catherine nods eagerly, her face glowing with happiness. “We are. We can’t wait.”

Mom stands back and looks between us both fondly before adding, “You know, you two should think about having more children if you can.” She places a gentle hand on Catherine’s stomach. “Your babies are going to be gorgeous.”

I let out a laugh and wrap my arm around Catherine, pulling her close. “Well, considering Catherine’s photography business is booming and my investments have been a tremendous success, we might just take you up on that offer soon.”

Catherine laughs and shakes her head. “We’ll see.”

Mom beams with delight. “That would be lovely.”

We all smile as the sun sets on our garden party, and I squeeze Catherine’s hand in mine as I admire the beautiful family we’ve become.

Just then, I hear a gasp from the other side of the yard. All eyes turn to see Erica and Fred heading our way with a large white cake, complete with twenty-six multicolored candles.

I call out to everyone gathered around us, “It’s time for Catherine to blow her birthday candles out!”

Fred sets the cake down on the table outside. Everyone gathers around to watch as Catherine takes a deep breath and blows out all of the candles in one go. She throws her head back in laughter while I give her a small kiss on the cheek.

Alice rushes forward and gives Catherine a big hug. “Happy birthday, Catherine.”

I break into a smile as Catherine rests her head on Alice’s head. “Thank you, honey. I couldn’t ask for a better stepdaughter.”

“I’m the lucky one,” Alice tells her brightly, tears pricking her eyes. “Becoming your stepdaughter was one of the biggest gifts I could have ever been given.”

I gently rub Alice’s back, grateful for our beautiful family. I always indulge in seeing the two of them interact. It’s moments like these that make my life beautiful. “Alice, why don’t you help cut and pass out the cake?”

Alice nods, breaking away from Catherine. “Sure thing, Daddy.”

As everyone indulges in the cake, I pull Catherine aside and whisper in her ear, “I have a surprise for you back inside.”

Catherine raises an eyebrow at me, a mischievous smile playing at her lips. “What kind of surprise?”

I smirk, taking her hand and leading her inside, toward our bedroom. As soon as the door closes behind us, I press her against the wall, my lips crashing onto hers in a heated kiss.

Catherine moans into my mouth, her hands tangling in my hair, as she kisses me back with equal fervor.

Breaking away for air, I whisper, “I’ve been wanting to do that all day.”

Catherine grins up at me, her eyes sparkling. “I know the feeling,” she murmurs, before pulling me back into another searing kiss.

I can feel the heat rising between us as we explore each other’s mouths, our hands roaming over each other’s bodies. I press Catherine harder against the wall, sliding my hands up her sides until they rest on her breasts. She moans into my mouth as I tease her nipples through her shirt, and I can feel my arousal growing by the second.

“What kind of present should I give you today?” I tease, running my fingers through her hair.

Catherine’s eyes light up with excitement. “Well, I have a few ideas,” she says, biting her lip.
