“Since Jason is still here, why don’t we keep up the charade?” I suggest. “Let’s make him think you’ve moved on once and for good.”
Erica claps her hands excitedly. “I love this idea. Well, not the idea of the two of you dating. But I’ll leave you two to do your thing.” She points a threatening finger at me. “Just watch yourself, Burke.”
I nod, grateful for Erica’s warning. “I will,” I promise.
As Erica walks away, Catherine turns to face me.
“Thank you,” she whispers, a mixture of emotions swirling in her eyes.
“For what?” I ask, even though I already know the answer.
“For everything,” Catherine replies with a shrug.
I take her hand in mine and lead her to the dance floor. We sway gently to the music, her head resting on my shoulder.
“You know,” she murmurs softly. “I never thought the two of us would dance like this.”
I chuckle. “Neither did I.”
Catherine looks up at me, her eyes filled with warmth and affection. “Why did you come, anyway? Is Alice with Grace?”
I shake my head. “My mom is watching her. Fred kept pushing me to check out the hotel. I thought I’d come and check what all the fuss is about.”
A smirk forms on Catherine’s lips at my lie, but she doesn’t press any further.
We continue to dance, lost in each other’s embrace. Suddenly, I feel a gaze on us and my eyes scan the crowd. My eyes stops when it falls on Jason, his face twisted in anger as he stares at us. He keeps looking back and forth between Catherine and me, unable to hide his displeasure. Then, with a resentful scowl, he turns abruptly and storms out, pushing through the crowd in a huff.
I snicker. “Jason definitely saw us before he made his dramatic exit. He looked pissed.”
“I don’t care,” she breathes.
I wrap my arms around her tighter and pull her close. “Then neither do I.”
The music changes to a slower pace, and we move more in sync with it, our movements almost like one. Everything around us fades away until there’s only the two of us, dancing together in a magical world of our own.
Catherine gazes up at me with admiration. I can’t help but think my dating life would be so much more fun if all of my dates were exactly like this. But then again, there’s no one quite like Catherine.
As the song ends, I dip her and plant a soft kiss on her cheek, lost in the moment. When we pull away, she gasps for breath.
“Sorry,” I tell her. “I got a little carried away.”
“That’s okay,” she whispers.
She steps forward and plants a kiss on each side of my cheeks, teasing me, until finally, her lips meet mine. Our kiss starts out soft, then grows hungry and demanding as we both surrender to the passion that we’ve been holding back for far too long.
As our kiss deepens, the sounds of the party fade away until there’s only the sound of our frantic breaths mingling together. I pull away from Catherine, gasping for breath, my heart racing faster than ever.
We stand there in the middle of the dance floor, lost in each other’s arms until I come to my senses.
“Do you want something to drink?” I ask Catherine.
She nods, her eyes twinkling with delight. “That would be nice.”
I take her hand in mine and lead her toward the refreshments table. Once we’re there, I pour a glass of champagne for each of us.
“So, did you mean it?” I ask before I take a sip from my glass.
She raises a brow. “Mean what?”
