When I turn around, Oliver is standing there, looking every bit the powerful CEO in his sharp black suit and tie. His gaze is trained on Jason, and he steps forward menacingly.

“I think it’s time for you to go,” Oliver commands in a low, dangerous voice.

“Oliver,” I breathe, eyeing both men as Jason takes a step closer to Oliver, until they’re standing face to face.

Chapter 12

Oliver

“Shedoesn’twanttospeak to you anymore,” I tell Jason, stepping protectively in front of Catherine.

Jason stares at us incredulously. “What? What are you doing here?” he splutters.

“I’m here with Catherine,” I reply calmly, but pointedly, my arm around her waist.

She turns to face Jason, a newfound strength in her expression.

“Jason, this was all your choice,” she says firmly, almost fiercely. “When you said those words to me back then, it made me realize how much I had been willing to give up for something that wasn’t even genuine love.”

Jason’s jaw drops open. “You mean… you’ve been seeing him this whole time?” he says, nodding at me.

“No,” she replies. “Unlike you, I know how to remain faithful.” Catherine glances up at me. “But wearetogether now.” She pauses for a moment, clearly steeling herself to say the next part. “And it’s been this way for several weeks now.”

“I saw the two of you together on our wedding day,” Jason points out. “You were running into a room together, then Oliver insisted you weren’t with him.”

“I was trying to help her get the hell away from you,” I retort.

I step forward, ready to defend Catherine, but she holds her arm out to stop me.

“Stop, Oliver,” she says, her eyes flickering with a fierce determination. “Jason, I’ve realized that I need to be with someone who respects me, who trusts me, and who loves me for who I am. You might have been all of those things once, but not anymore.”

Jason stares at her, his face a mask of disbelief. “So you’re leaving me for him?” he finally says, pointing at me.

“I left you forme,” she replies firmly. “For the woman I want to be, for the life I want to live. And right now, that life doesn’t involve you.”

Jason’s face falls, and he takes a step back. “I don’t understand,” he mumbles. “Why can’t we talk, just the two of us?”

Catherine’s lips curl into a bitter smile. “You don’t get it, do you? You cheated and got another woman pregnant. Your own careless actions are why I left you before our ceremony.”

She turns away from Jason and I wrap my arm around her waist, pulling her close to me. “By the way.” She faces him once more. “Thank you for helping me see the error of my ways. I don’t plan on waiting until marriage anymore.”

Jason snarls and lunges toward us, raising his fist to punch me. I quickly step in front of Catherine and block him, returning the punch with one of my own. He falls back against the table, a look of shock on his face before he scrambles away.

Catherine peers up at me with wonder in her eyes.

I smile down at her, feeling a swell of pride in my chest as I wrap my arms around her shoulders.

Erica rushes over, her eyes gleaming with confusion. “What the hell just happened? Is Catherine okay?”

She turns to Erica and gives her a gentle smile. “I’m fine,” she says calmly. “Jason and I merely had a discussion about the decisions we’ve both made in life.”

She looks up at me with adoration in her eyes. In return, I shoot her a smirk.

“Do you want to leave?” I ask gently, but Catherine shakes her head and smiles.

“No,” she says adamantly. “I want to stay.”

I glance around the room, scanning for any sign of Jason. I spot him in a corner across the room, watching us with a look of contempt on his face. He meets my gaze and I give him an intense stare that brooks no argument before turning away from him.
