Vane’s arms tense around me, but he doesn’t move to help the other lycan. Instead, he lowers me to my feet, as Gideon ordered, and follows behind me as we flee from the building. We reach the front door and Gideon holds it open, beckoning us through toward the large, black van on the other side of the street.

The second we pass the threshold, I feel the slightest sting at my neck.

My vision blurs. My limbs turn leaden.

Then darkness.

Vane

“What the fuck did you do that for?” I roar, catching the fragile vampire as she drops like a stone.

“Cain let her go too easily.” Gideon sweeps past us, discarding the needle he stabbed her with as he goes. “One second she was ready to execute Silas, the next she’s coming with us willingly? I don’t think so. We can’t trust her.”

Silas has already reached the van and yanks open the door to expose Finn, surrounded by his monitors and tech. I shoulder my way in, take a seat on the bench, and wait for my brother to slam the door closed.

Silas takes the seat beside me, and I lay our vampire across our laps without another word. Gideon and Draven climb into the front and take the two seats next to Frost. The ghoul has both hands on the wheel, ready to get us out of here, but he’s currently staring in the rear-view mirror like he’s seeing a ghost.

“Moon over her later,” Gideon snaps. “Those ghouls won’t last long against Cain and Morwenna.”

Frost visibly shakes himself and hits the gas like the hounds of hell are on his heels, which they are.

Sirens blare the instant we take off, almost like they were waiting for us.

“Frost,” Gideon snaps.

“Working on it.”

Our fearless leader’s brows are furrowed in concentration as he swerves across the road. Our van only narrowly avoids the manhole cover that flies up, and I watch with grim satisfaction as ghouls erupt from the sewers.

He’s been building their numbers beneath the city for weeks, and now they’re unleashed. Leaping onto the armoured cars weaving after us and causing chaos.

Civilians flee in all directions, distracting the ghouls with the promise of easier prey. Only Frost’s link to them keeps them attacking Cain’s men, but that can’t last forever.

It takes a lot of concentration for Frost to control so many ghouls. Too much. We almost crash into a parked car before Gideon takes the wheel and yanks us onto a side street.

“We have to get out of the city,” Gideon mutters, elbowing our other alpha until he reluctantly cedes the driver’s seat to him.

“Agreed,” Finn mumbles, glancing at Evie. “There’s a safehouse on the Hudson.”

“That’s only an hour away,” I growl. “Not far enough.”

“It’s just for a few days,” Frost retorts, climbing into the back and almost falling as Gideon takes a corner fast enough that the whole vehicle tilts to one side before he manages to right it. “If we lie low for a while and wait out the initial search, then we can move her to the mountains. The lodge on the lake is safe enough.”

“We just invaded the Court,” Silas objects, running a hand through his hair. “Nowhere is safe.”

Frost reaches for our girl, and I growl, pulling her into me.

For an instant, his irises pale and his cheeks hollow as anger breaks his control. Unlike ghouls, with their mouthful of needle teeth, Frost has double fangs that are more reminiscent of his vampire half. There are the traditional two in the space where a human would have canines, and a second, shorter set next to them. Right now they’re lengthened in response to his aggression as he battles the instincts of both vampire and ghoul.

Being a hybrid sucks.

I’m not much better. My own fangs dropped the moment Cain turned on us, and resisting the urge to bare them at Frost is taking everything I have. If I do that, I will escalate the whole situation. Doing that with Evie, unconscious between us, would be downright stupid.

Frost’s eyes darken as he regains control, and his fangs slowly start to recede. He nods at me in thanks before settling on the bench across from us.

He might be her thrall too, but until things are settled between them, he doesn’t get to touch her. If the centuries of baggage is too much for her to forgive, then he never touches her. Period.

The whole van jerks as Gid takes a corner too fast. I swear I actuallyfeelthe hover drive groaning in complaint before he jerks the wheel straight again.
