Sammy: How the hell should I know?

Dad: Because I’m betting money that your biker boyfriend took her.

Sammy: I seriously have no clue, but I’ll find out if that’s true as soon as I can.

I stewed in my questions for what felt like an hour before I finally broke down and texted Bigfoot.

Sammy: Are you almost done? Everything okay?

I hated to be that person, but what if he made up the shroom excuse to go torture Colleen for being a bitch? I thought about that for a minute and two things jumped out at me. The first was that “an emergency with a shroom grow operation” seemed like a weird lie to tell. The second was that I wasn’t exactly mad at the prospect of someone putting Colleen in her place - even with physical violence - considering the fact that she stole my inheritance and was still actively trying to steal the rest of it out from under me. Fuck her all the way to hell and back.

I was lost in a weird stream of hate-fueled fantasies of offing my dad’s wife when the door to the room burst open.

“Is Hawk okay? Are you? What’s going on?”

“We’re fine.”

“You texted me.”

“Yes, because I was curious how long it would take to get some answers I need.”

“About what?”

“Well, my dad texted me and he swore that you might have kidnapped my stepmonster.” Bigfoot looked angry and it made me wonder. “You did, didn’t you?” I questioned.

“The thing I wanted to tell you before we were interrupted?” he said, though it sounded more like a question. I gestured for him to get on with it. “Well, we’ve been looking into your stepmom, and we were ready to pounce on her the minute she tried to skip town.”

“Where is she?”

“I don’t fucking know because I got called to handle Hawk, the guys left to get you, and I’m guessing she used that opportunity somehow to slip through our surveillance.”

“Why did you have her under surveillance, other than she’s a giant twat who should have choked on her own umbilical cord before disgracing the Earth with her birth?”

“That was vivid,” he said as I shrugged. It was true as far as I was concerned.

“We know that she told the second assassin where to find you.” I sat still and listened, so Bigfoot carried on. “Then we realized that there was more to her story. Glitch dug up some information that led us to believe she has loyal family ties to the Mojave Devils MC.” I nodded, still waiting for the part of all this that would surprise me. “When your dad and uncles told us about the furniture being tampered with in the house you inherited and moved into recently, it made us wonder if she tampered with anything else. I had Glitch check to see if the place was bugged.”

“Was it?”

Bigfoot nodded. “I guarantee it’s how they knew you were headed to school for an exam today. We got the bugs, but not before they knew your plans. Since you didn’t share them with us and slipped your tail, we had no way of knowing where you would be. It proves the MDMC is involved somehow with the Rivera Cartel, though.”

“You think Colleen set me up to give herself time to break away because she suspected we were on to her?” I asked.

“Seems likely considering your father texted thinking we took her.”

“That bitch. I hope she fell into a giant fire ant pit, naked, and that they eat her alive. Except for her diseased cunt because I don’t think even fire ants would touch that.”

“Again, vivid. Your dad…”

“Eww, please don’t say what I think you’re going to say.”

Bigfoot threw his head back and laughed. “Ah, no, that was not where I was going to go with that.”

“Wait! What about my brother?” I asked as I grabbed my phone and dialed my dad’s number. It only took two rings before he answered. “Sammy?”

“Dad, where is Ryan? Did she take him with her?”

“Of course she didn’t. Your man took her, and they left Ryan behind. He’s the one who told me that the man put her on the back of his motorcycle and left with her.”
