“Are you sure this is what you want to do?” Wade asked again.

The look of sorrow in his eyes as he gazed at her nearly broke her in two. Did he pity her because she’d never been wanted by another man?

She may be innocent in all things dating, mating, and men, but she knew enough to know she didn’t want to be anyone’s pity fuck.

“No. I’m not.” With all of her might, she pushed him off of her and jumped off the bed.

“Adalyn, wait!”

“Just leave, Wade. We’re done here.” She grabbed her clothes and ran to the bathroom.

The tears she’d been holding back let loose as soon as she clicked the tumbler on the bathroom door.

“How could I have been so stupid? So desperate to fit in that I’d jump the first guy in my life to show me any attention.”Years’ worth of self-doubt and insecurities flooded back into her mind. Self-loathing, her long-lost best friend, returned with a vengeance.

“How could I have been such an idiot to think he was really interested in me?”She glanced at her reflection in the mirror. Her brows scrunched as she studied her image. Her cheeks were round and full, perfect for pinching. Large breasts sat high above her curvy waist, and she had wider than average hips. She’d worked so hard on self-acceptance and loving the body she had, having given up some unrealistic idea of beauty she’d never achieve.

“I’m not about to throw that away for a man.”

She’d worked too hard, come too far, to give Wade that sort of power over her. Wasn’t that why she’d left the coven to begin with? Not because of some scheme her mother had cooked up, because she wanted to find out who she truly was.

Wade paced back and forth outside of the bathroom door, trying to figure out what had just happened? One-minute, Adalyn had been hotter than hell, ready to give him, of all people, her virginity.

Such a precious gift.

One he hadn’t felt worthy of.

Could she have somehow sensed that?

“Don’t be absurd. She couldn’t have known what was in your head or heart,”his wolf said.

Maybe it was for the best that she had, for whatever reason, put a halt to things. As much as it frustrated him and his wolf. He couldnotclaim her as his mate.

The unrelenting want and need he had for her had to stop. It had to be ignored. He, his wolf, theyhad to fight it. The primal attraction, the hunger, had to be kept in check. It didn’t matter how badly he wanted to beat down the door and have his way with her, ramming his cock deep inside of her until she screamed his name.

It didn’t matter that he didn’t know how he’d survive a single day without kissing her again.

Odin had expressly forbidden him from the thing he desired most.

His mate.
