“I think you should stay out of it. Remember what happened with Ruby Jean?”

“Fine. Fun-sucker,” the woman pouted as she walked away.

Jason glanced to Carter wondering what the hell any of that meant and who the hell Ruby Jean was.

Carter shrugged.

“Should I worry about anything in that conversation?” Jason asked.

“Nope.” Calder shook his head at Cam. “She just likes to stir up drama from time to time. But it sure would be nice if Gerri would start giving me a heads up when she sends people up here to mess with the peaceful small-town life thing we have going on here.”

“Does she, I mean Gerri, do that a lot?” Jason asked. His curiosity getting the best of him.

“What a strange pack,”his wolf weighed in.

“More than I’d like, but every mating match has worked out so far—so I’ll give her a pass for now.”

Jason wasn’t sure what was more astonishing, the fact that Gerri seemed to have set up several successful matings at Twisted Tail or the fact that the pack in question seemed to be, as his wolf had said, strange.

And getting stranger by the minute.

Carter kicked Jason under the table.

“Ouch. What the fuck?”

Carter silently motioned for him to look at Calder.

The Alpha’s eyes seemed to change. They went from a dark amber to pitch black, and back to amber in the space of a second. If he would have blinked, he would have missed it.

“Did Gerri tell you that you’d meet your mate here at Cam’s Diner or did she just say at Twisted Tail?” Calder asked.

“She told me I’d find my mate at Cam’s, but that I also needed to be careful. Especially with my—ummm.”

“Abilities?” Carter finished Jason’s sentence.

“Yeah. Thanks, man.” For the thousandth time in the last few hours, Jason wished Carter had stayed behind. He loved the guy like a brother, he really did, but Carter didn’t know how to keep his fucking mouth shut.

Jason wasn’t sure how much about himself he should bring up. Part of him felt like he could trust the Alpha with his life. The other part—ehhh. That’s where things got tricky. Exposing your strengths also exposed your weaknesses. Weaknesses that could and would be used against you by a potential enemy.

“Your secret is safe with me,” the Alpha said. “Besides, I’m sure you just saw the little parlor trick I like to do with my eyes.”

“That was freaky as fuck!” Jason slapped his hand over his mouth, not wanting to insult the Alpha.

Calder laughed. “I’ve heard that—on more than one occasion. But it allows me to see into a person’s soul. To see their true intent. I can see if a person is truly good…or truly bad. It’s a real time saver when dealing with people.”

“Holy Hell,” Carter gaped at the Alpha.

Jason arched an eyebrow. “I bet. Sadly, my abilities are much more a curse than a cool superpower like yours.”

“What do you mean?” Calder asked.

“He means that he can’t tell a lie. Ever,” Carter smirked.

“Seriously?” Calder laughed.

“Unfortunately,” Jason smiled at his misfortune.

“I can see where that would be a problem. It’s funny though. Even funnier now that I have an idea who your potential mate is.”
