Three
Mikah wanted to cringe as Gerri eyed her up. She felt like a bug under some sort of invisible microscope.
“You really think that I’d turn your life upside down on purpose?” Gerri asked with a gleam in her eye.
“Nope. Not at all.”
“Lie.”
“Sarcasm. So, no. I didn’t technically lie,”she corrected her wolf.
“You flipped my life upside down,” Cam said.
“Mine too!” Callie shouted.
“Don’t forget about me! I damn near killed Liam! If that isn’t a shit show, I don’t know what is!” Ruby Jean jumped on the bandwagon.
“Just for the record, Gerri. My life needed to be flipped upside down.” Daisy was the first to wrap Gerri in a tight hug.
“I’m with Daisy.” Bailey was the next to offer hugs of support.
Gerri laughed. “Well, I’m glad I still have some friends here and the rest of you didn’t chase me out of town the second I crossed the county line.”
“We’re just messing with you, Gerri.Of course, we still love you! How could we not? Our lives may have changed, but I don’t think there’s a single one of us who will say it wasn’t for the better,” Cam smiled.
Mikah rolled her eyes. “Ugh. Yeah, well, they seemed to have lapped up the Kool-Aid you put in their puppy chow, but I’m not falling for it. Keep me out of your sights. I like my life just the way it is.”
“Lie.”
“Oh my God. Would you please give it a damn break?”
“What is it that you’re afraid of?” Gerri asked as she took a seat at the counter.
Everything. Nothing. Mikah didn’t know how to answer Gerri’s question. Her life had been complete, total hell from her earliest memory. Her lies were the only thing that soothed her and kept her alive. Her parents, if you want to call them that, had been nothing but abusive both mentally and physically. She’d escaped them by running away when she was fifteen and never looking back.
Mikah steeled her spine and leveled a look of no bullshit on Gerri. “Nothing scares me. If you knew me, you wouldn’t even ask the question.”
“Lie.”
“Seems like your wolf and I agree that’s a lie, but that’s okay. She’ll whip you into shape eventually,” Gerri said.
“What is that supposed to mean? Is that some sort of threat? Who will whip me into shape? You? My wolf?” Mikah laughed at the thought. She controlled the animal within her. The animal did not and would not control her.
Ever.
As for someone else whipping her into shape—yeah right. She’d beat a bitch down in the blink of an eye. Why couldn’t people just leave her the hell alone? Was that too much to ask?
It was Gerri’s turn to laugh. “Not a threat, dear. Just an observation from someone who sees things outside of the box.”
“Whatever. I have work to do. Cam, I’ll be in the kitchen if you need me.” Mikah spun on her heel and marched off toward the kitchen. She would have tucked her tail between her legs—had she been in wolf form.
“Every time she shows up, shit hits the fan. Not this time. I—we are not going down without a fight,”Mikah said to her wolf.
“Would it be so bad to find our true mate?”her wolf asked.
“Yeah. It would be. It’s not what I want.”
“Lie.”
