“Remind me again why you’re packing up and heading for some shitty town in the middle of nowhere? And why I’m going with you?” Carter asked.
Jason threw the last of his suitcases in the bed of his truck and closed the tailgate with a flip of his wrist. “I’ve explained it a hundred times. I don’t know what else to say. If you want to stay here in this dump, stay. I’m not making you go with me.”
Carter may have been his best friend since birth, but the man was on his last nerve. Jason wasn’t used to the disbelief that rang loud and clear in Carter’s voice every time the subject of taking a trip to Twisted Tail Pack had come up.
Of all people, Carter knew that Jason couldn’t lie even if he had wanted to. The truth would inevitably spew from his lips no matter the circumstances. It was his curse. One that he’d lived with his entire life. He’d tried countless times to pry the reason of why he was the way he was from his parents only to be hushed and admonished every time he had asked.
“Hush, Jason. You must never speak of it. To do so would bring another round of curses down on our heads,” his mother used to say.
He eventually stopped asking, though he didn’t like it one bit.
“I know—I know, some old broad told you that your fated mate is there waiting for you. I can’t believe that you believe in all that mystical bullshit.”
Jason spun on his heel. “First, Gerri is anything but an old broad. That’s rude and completely uncalled for.Second, you didn’t feel the majik in that room. I did.”
“Whatever, man. Let’s do this.” Carter opened the passenger door and hopped in.
“I’ll repeat it again, in case you didn’t hear me the first three thousand times. You don’t have to go with me. In fact, I’d rather do this on my own.” Jason closed the cab of his truck and turned the key. The engine roared to life.
“Are you kidding? Even though I think you’ve lost your goddamned mind, I wouldn’t miss this for the world. I did some grade A internet stalking on this Twisted Tail Pack. Did you know they have bear shifters in their ranks? Bears and wolves working together for the greater good! Who would have thought?”
“Really?” Jason asked, bewildered by the idea.
“I’m sure you’ll fit right in. They sound as crazy there as you.”
