Her mouth snapped shut. “So, it’s true. You really can’t tell a lie. Can you?” Her eyes sparkled with amusement.
“Who told you about my curse?” It was his turn to look like a fish out of water with his mouth gaping open.
Cam grabbed a coffee cup and set it in front of him. “Small town. Remember? News travels fast.” She poured the steamy black liquid into his cup.
“Yeah, no shit.” The gossip chain certainly did work fast at Twisted Tail.
“To be perfectly honest—it’s hysterical that your mate is Mikah. You can’t lie and she seems to have a problem with telling the truth.”
Jason didn’t find it anywhere near as funny as Cam did. He just wanted to claim his mate. He wanted answers from her. Truthful ones. That way he knew what the fuck he needed to do in order to earn Mikah’s trust.
“I’ve noticed that. I’ve had a couple of conversations with her that were…uh— interesting.”
“That’s one way to put it! That girl drives me up a wall. I don’t have that kind of time to be trying to figure out what the hell she’s talking about most days.” A woman with long red hair set a plate filled with bacon, eggs, sausage links, and hash browns in front of him and smiled. “Don’t worry though. We still love her. Even if she is a lying pain in the ass.”
“Jason, this is Ruby Jean. Ruby Jean and Mikah are my cooks here at the diner.”
He smiled up at the woman. “It’s nice to meet you. This looks wonderful, but my wallet is back in my hotel room. I hadn’t planned on going anywhere last night.”
“Don’t worry about it. Consider it our treat. So, what brings you our way on this fine morning?” Cam asked.
What better way to get the information he wanted than by dangling an irresistible carrot in front of their faces? “I—uh was in my room at the hotel, the next thing I know I was in Mikah’s apartment. It was the weirdest thing I’ve ever experienced in my life.”
Give the women just enough information to make their mouth’s water.
“What the hell? What did Mikah do? What did she say about it?” Ruby Jean asked.
Jason took a sip of his coffee. “That’s the thing—she didn’t seem surprised by my sudden appearance. When I asked her about it, she deflected and changed subjects.”
Cam cracked a smile before schooling her face and acting like she didn’t have a clue as to what had happened.
Jason let it slide—for the moment.
“That is the strangest thing I’ve ever heard of. What was she doing at the time?” Ruby Jean asked.
Jason blushed. “Dreaming.”
And what a dream it had been. He tried not to think of the explicit detail, instead opting to dig into the delicious breakfast.
Cam burst out laughing. “I’m sorry. I know I shouldn’t laugh, but I just can’t help it. The look on her face must have been priceless. What I wouldn’t give to have been there to see it for myself.”
“Yeah, it was definitely something,”
“Oh my God! That’s what Mikah was talking about when she told me she had gotten her cat in a dream,” Ruby Jean gasped.
“What do you mean?” Jason arched an eyebrow in surprise.
“Nothing! She doesn’t know what she’s talking about,” Cam shushed Ruby Jean with a quick glance.
Jason ate a couple of pieces of his bacon, thinking about Ruby Jean’s statement. What did she mean by that?he wondered. What was it they weren’t telling him?
“Mikah is intent on lying in order to make me give up on her. You know that right?” He asked the women.
Cam sucked in a deep breath and nodded. “I was afraid of that. You have to find a way to break down her barriers, to get through that outer shell that surrounds her.”
They truly cared about Mikah and wanted the best for her.
“How can I do that? How can I break down those barriers, smash through that shell if I don’t know what I’m dealing with? Why don’t you throw a dog a bone? Tell me what I’m dealing with?”
