Seven
Mikah’s senses were on high alert. The second the rogue wolf entered the clearing her breath caught in her throat, her heart ceased to beat.
“No! It can’t be. This can’t be happening.”
His scent hit her instantly nearly knocking her on her ass—even in wolf form. Fight or flight kicked in, she wanted to run. Hard and fast. Needing to get away, far away. But she stood her ground—which was surprising as fuck because all she wanted to do was disappear as quickly as possible.
Her heart started to beat once again, a wild flutter in her chest. Her mind flashed back to the brief and bitchy conversation she’d had with Gerri at the Diner. Anger pulsed through her. She had been quite clear when she told Gerri to stay out of her life, that she wasn’t interested in dating anyone let alone finding her mate.
“Son of a bitch. I should have known she was up to no good!”
Her wolf remained oddly quiet, trying to process the fact that their one true mate had just entered the picture. It was exactly what her wolf had always longed for—needed—wanted.
Their mate.
Could she deny her wolf the one thing she desired above all?
Would she?
Mikah inched forward, wanting to get a better look at the man—err wolf who the Fates had decided to pair her with. As far as wolfs went, he wasn’t bad to look at. He was large, but not as large as the Alpha who towered over him. Thick ebony fur covered his body, but what drew her attention was his mesmerizing green eyes. Each individual fleck of gold danced in the sunlight. Stunning. Alluring. Seductive.
Her wolf remained perfectly still.
“Shouldn’t we run?”Mikah asked, hoping to kick her wolf into motion, deciding that any action at all was better than standing in the field looking like a damn statue, but her wolf paid her no regard, concentrating instead on the interaction between the Alpha and their mate.
What she wouldn’t give to be inside the rogue or the Alpha’s mind to hear the silent conversation that carried out between the two of them. Had the wolf been a member of the pack, she would have been able to hear every word spoken through the collective pack mind. Sadly, she had to sit this conversation out…and damn it to hell and back. She was a nosy bitch, she wanted to hear what was being said.
Agonizing and tense minutes ticked by. Enforcers surrounded her mate, looking as if they were ready to tear him limb from limb. She inched closer, ready to… She had no idea what? To help tear him apart that way she’d never have to deal with him or to help save him. Either option was on the table—really.
His eyes met hers once again, time seemed to move in slow motion. Mikah wanted to scream and tell him no when the rogue bowed to accept the will of the Alpha—to become a member of the pack.
“Why would he have given up his freedom? Does he have any idea what he has done?”
“He did it for us,” her wolf finally spoke up.
“I was afraid of that. So now what do we do?”she asked, truly confused as to what her wolf’s thoughts were on the matter. Normally, they were perfectly in sync with their thoughts and most of their feelings, but she had no idea where her wolf stood on the matter or if she even remotely liked the male in front of them.
“Now we run!”
Her ears flattened against her skull as the wind whipped by. Mikah could barely believe the path her wolf had chosen to take, thinking the animal would all but beg for their mate to claim them. Laughter filled her mind. A lightness she’d never felt swept through her body.
Footfalls sounded behind her, branches and twigs snapped. Laughter sounded again in her mind.
“Motherfucker.”
Realization dawned on Mikah. Her wolf had known exactly what she was doing when she ran. She knew the male would follow, instinct would demand that he give chase. He couldn’t resist even if he had wanted to.
It was nothing more than one big-ass game to her wolf.
Mikah wanted to scream, she wanted to call foul. Her wolf had tricked her into believing escape was a viable option. She tried to surge forward and put an end to the mating game her wolf had started, but her wolf pushed back, easily denying Mikah’s demand.
Mikah had been so caught up in the trick, she’d failed to realize their location. Her wolf ground to a halt, barely escaping a sudden plunge over the cliff. The male snarled behind them as he inched forward.
