So much for indifferent. She was going to have to get much better at this indifference thing to match his level.
Ethan arched an eyebrow as she turned to face him. “Oh, I think you do.”
Cam tried like hell to keep her breathing steady and her heartbeat under control. The last thing she wanted him to know was that she had any interest in him. She’d rather jump in front of a bus than display one iota of attraction toward him.
“In case you haven’t noticed, now isn’t a good time for me. I’m busy.” Finally indifferent.
A low rumble vibrated in his chest. She ignored it, not giving a flying fuck if he had liked her answer or not. She sidestepped him, pleasantly greeting the couple waiting behind him.
She plastered a smile to her face, one she reserved for people she actually liked. “Cora, Henry, It’s great to see you. It’s been a while.”
“Henry’s new job has been keeping him busy,” Cora quietly offered the excuse as to why they hadn’t stopped by the diner to see her.
“That’s great!” Cam was genuinely happy to hear the news. “So much has changed in our little town since Calder took over. I’m glad to see the two of you doing so well.” And they were. That was what was most surprising. Cora looked like all the stress she’d been under for years had been washed away. She looked healthy and vibrant. Henry looked proud and walked with a newfound bounce in his step. The hold the old Alpha had on the people of Twisted Tail was finally, and hopefully, forever gone.
“It sure has, and what a relief!” Cora agreed.
“Let me grab a couple of menus, and find the two of you some seats.”
Cam led her friends to a quiet booth and placed the menus in front of them. “Someone will be with you shortly.”
“Are you not going to offer to seat me?” Ethan asked as Cam made her way back to the hostess booth.
“I didn’t realize you were staying.” She thought he would have bolted after she’d denied his request to talk.
“I told you we need to talk. You’re busy, so I’ll wait.”
“I get that you want to talk and all, but I’m here until well after closing. I’m not going to have any time to sit around and shoot the shit with you.”
“You work open to close?”
She gave him a look of exasperation. “I’m the owner. What do you expect?”
Without giving him a chance to answer, she turned on her heel and mumbled. “Follow me.”
Cam tried hard to contain the blush that began to creep up her neck and face. She could feel Ethan’s eyes trained on her ass as she led him to a table. Weeks had passed since she had first met him. The instant desire she had felt for him should have lessened—with him being a dick and all, but it hadn’t. Unfortunately, her curiosity about him had only doubled.
Her BFF, Callie and his brother Wade were settling in nicely in their new home as a mated couple, while she watched Ethan from afar and waited for him to make his move—any move. Thankfully, the few times that she had seen him, he’d not given her the horrified and disgusted look that he had given her the first time they’d met.
The downside to her BFF being her unofficial sister-in-law was that she got to hear countless stories about the brothers. It would have been great if Callie would’ve omitted anything that had to do with Ethan, but she hadn’t—and Cam wouldn’t dare say a word to her—or rain on Callie’s parade with her own pity party.
Wade made Callie happy. The happiest she had ever seen the girl. She wouldn’t take away that happiness just because Ethan didn’t seem to care that Cam was his mate.
“Here you go. Someone will be with you shortly,” Cam said as she flung a menu down on the table and marched away.
