“We need to take this to the Council. They have to know what has been going on right under their noses. How many other executioners have faced this problem? Ethan can’t be the only one that this has ever happened to.” Cam sat across from Calder, looking to him for guidance.
After she had met with Wyatt and Callie, they decided to see what kind of help Calder could offer. He was their Alpha and would ultimately be Ethan’s as well when he joined the pack.
Cam couldn’t sit around and do nothing. She had to find a way to help her mate. It didn’t matter who she had to wake up or piss off at this time of night. The only thing that mattered to her was finding a way to save Ethan.
There had to be something she could do.
“I have a friend who sits on the Council. Let me make a phone call, and I’ll see what he says. The only thing that I’m worried about is that we don’t know who hired Ethan to kill the innocent woman. That’s going to be a problem. Were you able to catch a name in any of his memories?”
Cam shook her head from side to side, indicating that she hadn’t. “No. It was as if whoever had hired him had been very careful to protect his name. I didn’t even get a good look at him. I don’t know if I’d recognize him or not.”
“What about you, Wyatt? Did Ethan ever give you any indication or clue as to which pack or packs he was working for?”
“None whatsoever. I feel like such an ass for not asking. What kind of brother does that make me? To not even know who my brother is working for.”
“I don’t think any of this is your fault. Ethan is a big boy, and he made his own decisions.” Cam patted Wyatt gently on the shoulder.
“He didn’t want you to know anything about this part of his life. He worked hard keeping this a secret from you. I might be doing all of this to save him, but who knows how pissed he’ll be when he finds out that I blabbed his secret to everyone?”
Each memory of Ethan’s had been crystal clear when it came to the stories he’d fabricated to placate his brother’s curiosity. He’d been adamant about keeping his work life separate from his home life, feeling it was the only way he could protect his brother.
Now that she pieced together the critical details, Cam couldn’t blame Ethan one single bit. Not for his choice of profession, or the fact that he kept it from Wyatt. As a member of the Twisted Tail Pack, she’d seen her fair share of death over the years. It wasn’t something she liked to witness first hand, but she knew there were times when the punishment had to fit the crime, and unless a pack had their own executioner, which was rare, they often hired out for the job.
Cam had to ask herself if she could live with the career path her mate had chosen? Now that shit had hit the fan, was it something he would continue to do? Or would he look for another line of work?
It wasn’t like any of it mattered right at this particular moment. She didn’t even know if he would want anything to do with her when it was all said and done. That is…if they manage to save him.
“I’ll be back in just a minute.” Calder stood up and excused himself from the group.
“Hopefully, he can get us some backing from the Council. That would be the best case scenario right now.” Callie tried to stay optimistic for both Wyatt and Cam.
God bless her heart. Cam new the Callie had gotten to know Ethan quite well over the last month. He had been a constant fixture in her life now that she was mated to Wyatt. And that was a good thing. She loved seeing her best friend happy, surrounded by people who would love and protect her.
“I’m not holding my breath when it comes to the Council. As far as I’m concerned, they do more harm than good,” Wyatt grumbled.
“Luckily, I know someone who is willing to help,” Calder said as he stepped back into the room.
Cam jumped to her feet. “Really? That’s great news. Just what we were hoping for.”
Calder took a seat behind his desk. “It’s going to be a little complicated, because we can’t give them the name of the Alpha behind this bullshit. But that shouldn’t be a problem. We need to figure out where Ethan is and go from there. Once we’ve located his position, we can inform the Council and they’ll move in. We just need to keep Ethan safe until they get there.”
Maybe she spoke too soon. Maybe Wyatt was right. “I guess… I expected more. It really doesn’t sound like they’re going to do much of anything.”
Calder ran his fingers through his hair. “I know it doesn’t sound like much, but it really is, especially from the Council. You have to remember, they try to stay out of local pack matters. Because Ethan is a member of this pack, and he has another pack’s Alpha gunning for him, they’ve decided to stand behind Twisted Tail in this matter.”
Cam tried to keep the look of disappointment off her face, knowing said disappointment wouldn’t do her a damn bit of good. “So how do we find out where he is?”
Calder looked to Wyatt. “Have you tried calling his cell phone?”
“Yeah, I have, but he hasn’t answered it in weeks. I don’t think he is spending very much time in human form. He’s assuming that I don’t know what’s going on, so if he’s in wolf form, we could use it to our advantage.”
“Cam, I know you’re new to the whole mating thing, but I need you to concentrate on figuring out his location. Your wolf has the knowledge and the power to find her mate. I may be the Alpha, but my powers are limited to the wolves who have sworn loyalty to this pack. I have no way of locating him. You’re the only one who can do it.”
“I—I’ve never done this before. What should I do?” she asked.
“Issue the command to your wolf. Tell her to find her mate, and let her do what needs to be done.”
