Lexi
“Everything looks good, Ms. James,”Dr. Drury says as she clicks around on the computer. “Scans are clear. Without the lingering bruising I’d say you are as good as new.”
I force a smile, hearing her words but my mind is too busy wondering into places it shouldn’t.
“Do you have any questions for me?”
“No,” I say, again smiling wondering if I look like some crazed lunatic as I force it. Like that movieSmile, all creepy and odd looking. “I’m just ready to be cleared to go back to work.”
“You are good to return to regular activities. However if you notice any blurred vision, headaches, or dizziness, I’d like for you to call the office. If it’s after hours you need to be seen at an Urgent Care or ER. I don’t suspect that to be the case, but do me a favor and don’t overdo it.”
“I won’t.” The only thing that seems to be in overdrive right now is the lingering idea that Bennett is hiding something.
With a quick checkout, I exit the doctor’s office and walk across the parking lot toward my car.
After climbing inside, I press the button and just sit, looking around.
Bennett is getting Camryn from school as promised. They’d made plans to go to his parents and then stop for ice cream before coming home. I should be there, but I’m hitting the uncomfortable state I hit when I am afraid to face something. Avoidance doesn’t make things any better, I know this. But unfortunately I still do it.
Driving through Montgomery, along the streets I know so well, I get lost in my thoughts. Somehow ending up at Kendall’s dad’s automotive shop.
I park along the curb, looking through the one open garage door, seeing workers moving around inside.
Not sure what I’m doing, or why I found my way here, I climb out and walk across the road. Peeking my head inside, I see Kendall leaning over under the hood of a blue truck.
Her dad waves me in and points toward his daughter as he walks by and disappears inside the office.
I’ve never met a more badass girl than Kendall. Seriously she can outdo most men when it comes to working on vehicles. She can rebuild an engine without any amount of hesitation and she drives around a tow truck rescuing stranded men that don’t even know how to change their own tire.
She is the perfect mix of salty and sweet. The kind of girl that doesn’t need a man and loves to make sure they know that. She is gorgeous, fun, and right now I need her to be my sounding board. I need someone to tell me I’m being stupid, and it can’t be what I’m thinking. I need someone to set me straight.
“What did you get?”Kendall asks, pointing to the sandwich I’ve yet to take a bite of.
“Um.” I don’t even remember as I lean forward and look. “Turkey and ham.”
Kendall takes a bite of hers, leaning back in her chair and watching me close. She knows something’s up, but she has yet to ask me. I need her to ask me, so I don’t feel like such a fool for blurting it out. Even as I sit here, rolling the idea around in my mind I think it’s crazy.
“Did you go to the doctor?”
“Yeah.” I bite into the bread, nibbling on it. I’m not even hungry but when Kendall finally realized I was there and took a break, she said she was starving. So here we are, at a small cafe around the corner, sitting in the front booth.
“And?”
“And what?” I ask her confused.
“The doctor?” she says with a laugh.
“I went, yes,” I say again losing my train of thought.
“Lexi,” she says, looking at me with a strange look on her face. “What is going with you? And before you say nothing, you shouldn’t waste your time trying to convince me of there being any truth in that. Obviously something is up.”
I stare at her, then look down at my uneaten sandwich. Pushing the plate away I lean forward resting my elbows on the table. “Do you think Bennett would cheat?”
Kendall stares at me, holding her sandwich.
“I mean, I don’t think he would, but,” I pause, feeling my stomach twist. “He’s so attached to Camryn and he’s busy with his house and work but,” Again I pause.
I feel like a fool for even suggesting it.
