“I gotta ask the question we are all wanting an answer to now.”

“No you don’t!”

“Does Bennett know what to do when he goes downtown, Lex?”

Throwing my hands in the air, I walk toward the front door and hear them all laughing behind me, just before Bennett hooks me around the waist again and lifts me from the ground.

Yes, he definitely knows his way around downtown. He knows just what to do. But that, I plan on keeping all for me.

CHAPTER THIRTY-EIGHT

Bennett

“We are doing Rizzo’s tonight,”Lexi taunts me. “Spaghetti, meatballs, and garlic knots,” she pushes a little more as if she actually has to bribe me to come hang out with her and Camryn. Honestly it’s quickly become my favorite pastime.

What neither of them know is that I’ve been incorporating a space for her at my place too. Somehow when I thought of Lexi, I thought of Camryn as part of the package. It’s crazy how quickly that all shifted. She’s been at her place just shy of two weeks and everyone has already managed to fall in love with the little lady.

I can see why Lexi fell for her so hard and so fast.

“Camryn even ordered pizza bread too, with extra pepperoni.”

“I knew she and I were best pals,” I say with a smile. “The kid knows what I like.”

“The only stipulation is that she gets some too.”

“Hell yes, she does. It’s a thirty-seventy split, she and I have a secret deal in place.”

“So that means you’re joining us for dinner and movies?”

“Will there be ice cream sundaes?” I ask, already knowing the answer. It’s become our thing. Camryn and I, to Lexi’s horror, have a standing battle of who can create the biggest sundae. Piled high with every topping you can think of, smothered in fudge and sprinkles, then finished off by a heaping mound of whipped cream. It’s a heart attack in a bowl, but the best part is making them with her.

I’ve really got a soft spot for Cam. She’s weaseled her way into my heart and fast.

“I picked up more fudge and sprinkles on our way home,” Lexi says with a laugh. “There will always be ice cream sundaes.”

“Well, how could I ever say no to that?”

I was already climbing up into my truck.

“I’ll see you in less than an hour.” I just need to stop by my place for a quick shower and I’ll be on my way.

“Hey,”I say, standing behind her chair as she tilts her head back to look up at me. Leaning in I kiss her and she smiles against my lips.

“How’s it going, ladies,” I greet the rest of them as they all sit around the table in my mother’s kitchen, peeling fruits and chopping.

With canning season going strong my mother has managed to recruit some ladies to help. Sutton, she knows now without even being asked that her mother-in-law gets her full attention during this process. With her comes Lexi, and she’s managed to convince Jillian and Sophie to make a weekend of it.

When Brantley was at my place earlier he said they’d been at it for hours.

The guys and I’ve been working away on the interior of my place, plastering and sanding, trying to get as much done as we can get done on weekends.

Uncle Randy just got hired to lead a new project on the east side of Montgomery. Four apartment complexes that another contractor faulted on, and there was a deadline he had to try to salvage. This meant pulling double time and using a lot of the guys we had working on my place. I get it, yes my build is a paying job, but he wasn’t making much on it.

I said from the start no handouts, that I’d wanted to be treated like any other paying customer who was building a house. I should have known better. Uncle Randy treats his family good, and in the end I think he might break even on this one. No matter how hard I pushed at him, he wouldn’t budge. He was the same way with Brantley.

Grabbing a chair I turned it backwards and placed it into the space between Sutton and Lexi. Sitting down I look between the two of them.

“Peaches.” I nod and Lexi purses her lips. She hates peaches.
