I smile remembering his night of torture. I think he secretly loved it, even if he complained the entire time.

“Is it too soon for me to meet her?”

Again I look over to find him smiling as she shuffles through the different options of frilly dresses.

“She’s playing makeover.”

“I love makeovers,” Bennett says with any overly excited laugh.

“Come on.” I motion for him to come inside, needing to see this unfold. Closing the door behind him, I turn toward the two of them. “Camryn.” She bites his lip focusing really hard on the task at hand.

“I have someone I want you to meet.” Bennett and I move into the living room and I watch as Camryn turns and looks up. Up and up, Bennett is pretty tall and Camryn’s eyes widen.

“Hey, little lady,” Bennett says, kneeling down at her side. “I’m Bennett.” He holds out his hand and Camryn looks at it. “I’ve heard so much about you from Lexi, I couldn’t wait to meet you myself.”

“Are you her boyfriend?” Instantly my stomach grows tight as I imagine how awkward of a position this puts him in. But Bennett doesn’t even hesitate to respond.

“Yeah,” he says, surprising me. “I am.”

Camryn holds his stare. “Cool,” she says with a nod. “Do you want to play Mario? I bet I can crush you.”

I step back, sitting on the edge of the couch, and taking it all in. Camryn is so comfortable and Bennett is completely at ease. I am in awe of how easily the two of them become best pals. It’s not even like they just met but have truly known each other their entire lives.

CHAPTER THIRTY-THREE

Lexi

“Doyou want me to help you get her to bed?” Bennett looks over at me from the other end of the couch. Camryn passed out more than an hour ago after video games and pizza. We didn’t even make it to ice cream and halfway throughMonsters Inc.

“I can probably get her,” I say, contemplating her height and weight compared to my own.

I hear Bennett chuckle. “Babe you are one ten soaking wet. Let me help you.”

“I’m more than one ten, but I get what you’re saying.”

I get up slowly and walk down the hallway, pulling down the covers in Camryn’s room. Stepping to the side when Bennett enters, I watch as he lowers her to the mattress and makes sure she’s in the middle. Immediately she curls over onto her side and Bennett carefully covers her up.

When he turns I’m staring at him.

“She’s out.” I nod in agreement as he walks toward me. Looking around he takes in the room. “Purple?”

“Her favorite color.”

“Did you know that before you set up this room?”

“I guessed and got it.”

“You did good.” He nods. “It’s a nice room.”

“I figured we could decorate it a little more after she got here and was able to pick out some things herself.”

Bennett nods then shifts his gaze back to meet mine. “Thanks for letting me hang out tonight.”

“It was fun,” I tell him. “You have a new best friend.”

“She’s a great kid,” Bennett says, lifting his hand to rest it on my hip. “Let me help you clean up.”

“It’s okay,” I say, licking my lips as I stare up at him. His eyes follow the movements as he starts to back me out of the room. Once we are in the hallway he pulls the door closed behind us and backs me up to the opposite wall.
