But that couldn’t be my ending.
Claudia said that I made him happy. That he was better with me, than without. She didn’t know the kind of baggage I came equipped with.I’d have to leave before I ruined him forever.
Three more days.Make them amazing, because that’s all you’re going to get.
I told myself that, over and over, until I finally fell asleep.

Ihave a fucking gorgeous woman.
I woke in bed Tuesday morning with her tucked into the crook of my arm, her wild blonde hair splayed over my chest, our legs in a tangle under the sheets.
She wasn’t my girlfriend, yet, because I supposed that required some mutual agreement to that fact. And I wasn’t sure about the specifics.I hadn’t had an official girlfriend in ages. Not since high school. This was the first time in my adult life that I’d ever felt that kind of possessiveness.
I wanted to make us official in some way.
But first things first. It was after ten a.m.We’d fucked from about four in the afternoon, all night long, feeding off one another, and now I was starving.Kissing her temple, I slipped out of her arms to make us breakfast.
I went downstairs, wondering how she could have this effect on me.Everything in the house looked brighter. My head didn’t hurt, and my mind felt clearer. The haze I usually walked through was gone.I felt…whole. For the first time in ages.Like for once, pieces of my life weren’t missing.
After I called to check whether anything important needed my attention at the office and checked my email, I mixed up the pancakes—chocolate chips for her—and it hit me.I’d slept last night.Well, in between fucking, but I’d really slept, without dreaming of those eyes.I’d sleptgood. Was that fate saying the woman who’d haunted my dreams was finally in the right place, beside me?
All the more reason to make it official.
She kept saying that she was leaving. But maybe last night was reason enough to change her mind.
As I was heating up the pan, I got a call from my police detective friend and hit the speaker button with my one flour free finger.“Hey, dickwad,” Kyle said.
I laughed.“What happened to Your Highness?”
“That was last week,” he said.“That’s old news now.Listen.That girl of yours.Roselynn Reid. Please tell me you two are not serious.”
“What if we are?”
“Because I’ve been looking into it.And I need to bring her in for questioning.”
I stiffened and grabbed the receiver as I ducked my head into the hallway to see if Roselynn was anywhere in sight.Covering the mouthpiece, I hissed, “What the fuck for?”
“What the fuck do you think? She could be our girl.I think she may be Rebecca Reece, the woman who caused the accident. The one we’ve been looking for, man.It all makes sense.Don’t you think?”
I didn’t think.I knew.“You should forget I even mentioned it.It’s water under the bridge.”
There was silence just before he exploded into the phone, “Are you kidding me, man?Leaving the scene of an accident is a serious crime.Especially an accident that big. There were hundreds of thousands of dollars’ worth of damages. She hurt you, she hurt that truck driver, and she needs to be brought up on charges, if she’s our girl.”
I frowned into the pancake batter.“Yeah.But it’s over. She’s not a danger to society. And don’t you think she’s put herself in enough of a prison, just thinking about what she did, every day? What will charging her with a crime prove?”
“It’s justice. It’ll prove that our criminal justice system works,” he said.“Speaking of which, her boyfriend, Anthony Markin, is in prison for a slew of charges.Real bad dude.It was because of the accident that we were finally able to catch up with him.”
“Then maybe you should be thanking her.”
“It doesn’t work that way.He had all his charges overturned on a technicality. He’s been charged with fresh charges, an obvious attempt to undo whatever he did to achieve his acquittal. But if he gets out of those charges too, he could be out at any time.”
That was it.
Roselynn must surely know about all of this. She was here to settle her father’s estate. And then she was going to leave.Because of that bastard.
