“Remove this woman from my presence,” my aunt said to Brent, pointing at me.“She’s starting to get on my nerves.”
I made a face at her.
Brent extended his elbow to me, and I took it, thinking I’d probably make some faux pas and embarrass him at least once tonight.I’d never, ever been on a fancy date with a man before.
He walked me downstairs, and I nearly stumbled when a long stretch limo pulled up to the curb. There was a new driver there, who opened the door to the gleaming automobile for us.“Thank you,” I said, sliding into the back seat, trying not to show my surprise at the fancy car.
As soon as we were settled, Brent pressed a button and the partition between us and the driver closed. When he sat back into the seat, he moved closer to me, so that our thighs were touching. His gaze dropped to my legs, pretty much bare in the red chiffon because of that lethal slit.He cleared his throat.“So, tell me.”
“Tell you what?”
“Why you have to leave.”
The look in his eyes made me want to reveal everything. But I bit my tongue and lied.“Because I have a life.Away from here. And I need to get back to it.”
“Ah,” he said, his eyes dropping down to my cleavage.“What if you find something better here?”
I couldn’t answer.I gnawed on the inside of my cheek, thinking how unfair it was that the worst and best things in my life were right here in this city.I had nothing, truly, in Long Grove. No reason to go back, except one.
Anthony Markin would kill me if I stayed here.Or worse. He would keep me his captive, a slave to his every whim. The very thought made me realize there was some things worse than death.
As we zoomed off into midtown, Brent didn’t say another word.He simply reached out and laid a hand on my bare thigh.
I could’ve told him to move it.But that wasn’t what I wanted.I let it linger there, and after a minute, he started to draw lazy circles on my skin with his fingers.
Oh, god.It was just a fingertip on my thigh, and yet I didn’t think I’d ever been so turned on.I shivered in anticipation of what he’d do next, when he reached into his pocket and pulled out a coin.
“Want to call it?”
He was playing with fate again.I smiled slowly.“Heads,” I said as he tossed it.It landed on the seat beside me, clearly tails.
He looked at me as if he wasn’t surprised.
“That’s the first time we’ve gotten tails.”I couldn’t help but be disappointed.
He dug in his pocket again and handed me a new coin.“Try this one.”
Taking it from him, I looked at the heads side then flipped it over. Also heads. My eyebrows shot up.“So, you’ve been using a trick quarter?”
“Up until now.”His dark gaze never left my face.
I studied him curiously.“What was I calling?”
A smile in his chocolate brown eyes revealed a glimmer of mischief.“Whether I should kiss you.”
My insides clutched, and I barely suppressed a shiver as his gaze held mine.Which meant that with using an actual quarter, he truly was leaving what happened tonight in my hands.
Weakly, I said as I held up the trick coin, “Best two out of three?”
His lips spread into a smile. My heart began to pound as his gaze drifted over my features, concentrating on my lips.He was so close and smelled so good, manly. He reached out, trailing a finger lightly down my cheek, letting it drift under my chin, and tilting my face up to meet his.His eyes glimmered in the Boston’s city lights.
“You want this?”he murmured, the pad of his thumb brushing over my lower lip.
I nodded.
His gaze darkened. He lowered his head, and his lips captured mine, replacing his thumb, and our tongues moved slowly to meet. His tongue flicked inside my mouth, and the touch was like an earthquake of desire.
His lips parted, and he kissed me more deeply. Those beautiful, rough, manly hands of his moved from my cheeks to the sides of my head, pushing the loose tendrils from my face.He dug his fingers into the hair pulled up on the top of my head in a loose bun, and I pressed my breasts against his chest, still thinking I must be imagining this whole thing. The new Roselynn had lost this part of herself, hadn’t she? She’d sworn off men forever.
