After a few seconds, she put a hand on my arm. “Did I convince you, then?” she asked.

That question stunned me. Did I truly believe that I had her submission, that I had earned it? There was always another reason, an underlying motivation. Complete submission like that would never exist between us. Iris wasn’t the type. She never would be.

But that didn’t matter.

“No,” I said.

She looked down at her hands, then back up at me. She seemed fragile, then, like her skeleton was withering away, making her shrink. She should have been overjoyed, should have been celebrating. She had gotten what she wanted.

“What did I do wrong?” she whispered.

I grabbed her face in my hands, peering into those eyes, trying to figure out what it was that she was truly trying to say. She had gotten what she wanted. Was there anything left for her to win? Her bottom lip trembled, her mouth slightly open, begging to be kissed.

I let go and headed towards the door. I couldn’t do that. Not anymore. Giving in would only keep me here. It would bury me alive in this heartache.
