Suddenly, all the fear and confusion flowing through him was no longer there. Lowering his hands, he met her worried expression before his lids became too heavy. “What… are…”
Chapter 10
Serena watched Ethan from the same doorframe he’d leaned against earlier. She knew he was completely unaware of the change in him. On the other hand, she was more concerned about whatever he had seen to set off his power of telekinesis.
They had started to assume he would not even receive it. It was not unusual for oracles to not have it, but for those who did get it, the telekinesis powers were their weakest. They mostly chose not to use them at all because there was not a lot they could command to move.
Not Ethan.
His eyes popped open, and he jumped to his feet. “What did you do?”
Serena turned to her side and grabbed their lukewarm tea.
“How long was I asleep?” he asked, rubbing his hands across his thighs as she walked across the room.
“Ten minutes tops. I drew out some of your emotions before you made a mess.”
“You drew out my emotions? What mess?” he asked and glanced around her living room.
She sighed. “Take a sip of the tea. It will help.”
He eyed the amber liquid. “What is it?”
“Why are you suddenly not trusting me? Smell it. It’s the chamomile blend.”
Ethan’s nose flared the tiniest bit when he raised the mug to his lips.
“Start from the beginning. Why are you here? Why did you cloak yourself? What on earth did you see?”
Serena held her mug between her hands as she lowered to the couch. A little of her anxiety left when he joined her.
“I came for one of our sessions, but you had locked the door.” A flash of hurt crossed his face before he continued. He told her about the strange figure and cloaking himself. “You know the rest.”
“You had a vision,” she stated.
He stared at the ground and ran one hand and then the next down his jeans. “Doesn’t matter.”
She stopped her mug halfway to her lips before she turned directly toward him. “Doesn’t matter?” she asked incredulously. “Whatever you saw activated your telekinesis. I’m pretty sure it matters.”
“What?” he asked, his eyes wide with surprise.
“Ethan, without touching me, you pulled me toward you when you got here, and just a bit ago in the kitchen, you were making things like the tea kettle raise. I don’t know if you know, but it’s quite hard to boil water if the kettle isn’t in contact with the fire.” She was being bitchy, and she knew it. It was hard to keep her emotions in check with everything that had happened in the past hour.
Ethan set his mug on the table and glanced at her before scrubbing his hands over his face. She gave him a moment to process, listening to his shaky breaths. Her mind drifted to the memory of those same breaths along her skin.
Serena shifted in her seat at the heat between her thighs. After placing her half-full mug on the table next to his, she met his gaze. A look of surprise with a dash of disbelief shined back. “Ethan, I’ve never felt the need to lie to you.”
“I thought you said oracles usually didn’t get telekinesis?”
She nodded. “Usually being the keyword. It seems your Broderick blood is full of surprises. Now, will you please tell me what made you so upset that it activated your new powers?”
If she did not know better, she’d have sworn his face became pink with embarrassment. Ethan’s throat bobbled with a hard swallow before he sighed. When he opened his mouth, his words left her stunned.
Neither spoke as she processed his vision, a vision that included a very dead Serena. Her mind filtered through how it could come to pass. “I’m not sure who hates me that much…”
“You once mentioned not everything an oracle sees comes true,” he said, his voice thick with hope.
Lifting her gaze to his, she sighed. “No, but an oracle’s visions rarely change much. If you’ve seen me bleed out with a stab wound, the chances of altering it won’t be easy. It’d be kind of a miracle if I’m not stabbed. The bigger question is by who and if you can stop me from dying at the very least.”
