“I need to get home,” I tell him at the reminder of my son.
“Drive safely,” he says grinning sweetly.
Drive safely? Yeah, right. I’m in a haze the entire way home. Thankfully I do get there safely. Wes is on my mind in a strange way, as though he’s slipping under my skin. He can’t be, not after only minutes together.
If he actually calls, do I have time for a relationship? My free time is rather limited as it is. When I’m off, I do what I can to spend it with Jeremy.
“Jer?” I call out and close the door behind me. Silence greets me, and I head to the kitchen to drop off the ice cream I picked up on the way home.
In my room, I strip out of my scrubs and take a hot shower. The water beats at the knots in my back, and I sigh. Wes comes to mind again, and my hands glide down my skin. Giving in to my thoughts and desire, I tease, rub, and pluck at my sensitive spots until I’m gasping.
My body is warm and relaxed but still aching for a man’s touch. With a sigh, I shut off the water and dry. I slip on my pajamas and toss my hair into a ponytail on the top of my head as I move down the hall. When I pick up my phone, I find a message from Jeremy.
Jeremy: Eating with Mrs. Sanders and Cody. Be home later.
Natalia: I’m home. See you later.
I open the fridge to see what I can put together when my phone goes off again.
Unknown Number: This is Wes, the idiot who can’t follow doctor’s orders. It was wonderful meeting you today. I’d really like to take you out one night.
A shiver runs through me. Surprise mixes with excitement that he’s reached out and didn’t play any stupid games. I bite my nail, debating what to reply, when he sends me another text.
Wes: How do you feel about Mexican?
I chuckle and think of an ongoing joke I have with Jeremy.
Natalia: You shouldn’t eat people.
Wes: What?
Wes: Oh! Mexican food. You know what I mean!
Natalia: Haha… I could eat some Mexican food right about now. Too bad you can’t follow doctor’s orders and have to rest.
I stare at my text a second, surprised at how easy it is to flirt with him, before setting it down. I open the kitchen drawer filled with takeout menus, find my favorite place which delivers, and order a taco salad.
Wes: Good thing I met a beautiful nurse I’m willing to listen to. Maybe she can help me rest?
I shake my head and laugh. His question sends a flutter to my stomach, but I decide it’s better to leave it alone.
Natalia: Flattery will get you everywhere. I keep telling this to my son, but he doesn’t always heed my advice.
Wes: He will when he’s motivated by someone he’s attracted to.

“Mom?” Jeremy asks with a strange tone.
Turning away from the fridge with the orange juice in hand, I swing it shut and face him. “Yes, honey?”
“Who’s Wes?” he asks, and it’s then I see he’s holding my phone.
Breathing in deeply, I force an air of calm through me and move toward him. “A patient from last night. Why?”
Jeremy raises the phone toward me and the screen blacks out. “You gave him your number?”
Unlocking the phone, I see Wes’s text.
