Chapter Nine
Natalia
“Sweetheart, calm down,” Mom tells me for at least the tenth time. “I thought you said you liked this young man?”
I chuckle at her description of Wes as a young man. “I do, Momma!”
“Then whatever you wear will be fine. I saw how he looked at you. He’d sooner have you out of your clothes anyway.”
“MOM! Oh my God, I can’t believe you said that!”
Her smile makes me laugh. She gets off my bed and stands in front of me. “Oh, stop it. Maybe having sex would do you good, honey. Remind you what it feels like to be a woman.”
“Who are you, and what have you done with my mother?” I ask and shake my head.
Before she can quip back, the doorbell rings. I run my hands down my dress and sigh.
“Take a breath and come outside. I’m going to go greet your friend.”
My friend. Things with Wes are many things, but one label I really do enjoy is friend. Tonight is our first planned wine-and-dine date. We’ve met up a few times for coffee or to take the boys somewhere. This will only be us, and I’m about to lose my cookies. I’ve never been so nervous.
“Ma! Grandma is showing Coach pictures!” Jeremy calls, and I decide right then he deserves whatever video game he wants.
I snatch the small matching purse I set aside earlier and run out of my bedroom. The moment our eyes meet, my breath hitches. He’s dressed in a gray suit, and hot damn does he look fantastic in it. Goose bumps erupt along my skin at his perusal.
“Wow! You look beautiful!”
“Yeah, Mom, you look great!” Jeremy says with a nod of approval.
I blush at the attention. “Thanks. Are we ready to go?” Anywhere I can free him of his suit?
Wes smirks, and I have a feeling my deepening blush gives my dirty thoughts away. “Whenever you are.”
We say our good-byes, and Wes walks me to the passenger door but doesn’t open it. When I look up to see what’s holding him back, he presses me backward against the warm SUV. He cups my neck and steps into me. Our bodies are flush, and his erection pushes into my belly as he takes my mouth. His kiss leaves me breathless. Stealing every thought from my mind, his tongue caresses and teases mine.
“I’ve never wanted someone this badly,” he whispers against my lips.
My eyes flutter open, my vision hazy with desire. “Take me home then.”
Wes groans. “Dinner first,” he mutters and steps back to open the door.
“Where are we going?” I ask once we’re on the road.
“It’s a surprise.” He shoots me a bright smile, clearly excited.
I laugh. “You’re really enjoying this.”
“I am.”
Twenty minutes later, he pulls up to a building with valet. I look at him in silent question, but he only reminds me to grab my things. Walking hand in hand up the sidewalk, we enter and are greeted by a hostess. I’ve never heard of this place, and it’s amazing on the inside. Chandeliers, white linens, and flower arrangements are everywhere. Soft music plays in the background, and when we’re shown back, the few people sitting at tables are speaking in hushed tones.
Wes helps me into my seat, insists I order whatever I want, and buys us a bottle of wine to enjoy. The conversation flows and delights me as much as the food. With each passing moment, a shard of my heart breaks off and declares itself property of Wesley Wilkins.
“Why are you looking at me like that?” he asks after signing the receipt.
“Thank you,” I mouth before blowing him a kiss.
He stands before helping me from my seat, and I’m startled when he presses his lips to my neck. “You’re very welcome. It was my pleasure.”
