"Call me if you do. And call when you get ahead of Davorion." Daruss hung up without a goodbye. Seryn didn't mind. It meant he didn't have to field anymore questions.

Feeling emotions gave him a headache. And every emotion centered on Mitchell, which seemed logical given how they were fated mates. The problem was Seryn had shoved his emotions so far down for so long he had forgotten what it was like. His gut churned with worry. He had visions for the love of the gods. He told himself he'd see if something happened to Mitchell, but it didn't stop him from thinking about what could happen.

Seryn looked at the clock on the wall. Time seemed to slow.

Todd was afraid to talk to him. No doubt he could feel Seryn's anger still simmering just underneath the surface.

"I won't hurt you."

"I know." Todd's sigh was audible from across the room. "But you're going to hurt someone, right?"

"Probably."

"You have a thing for Mitchell, huh?"

Seryn made a noise of affirmation. "More than just a thing."

The door clicked when it opened. In walked the doctor from the emergency room. He had the same dark circles under his eyes, and he immediately searched the room. When his gaze landed on Todd, he sighed. As he spoke, it was clear he directed it at Seryn. "There are three people in suits who showed up in the emergency room. Since they look like mobsters, I'm going to assume you have something to do with them being here."

Seryn smiled. "Yes."

The doctor clearly didn't like him. He rolled his eyes. "They're asking about someone named Burke. Since I don't actually know the name of the guy you guys brought in, I thought I better let you know."

Seryn nodded. "Have they found him yet?"

"No. I used one of those name generator sites to come up with his name. No way would they guess it." His gaze landed on Todd again. "They mentioned you too, baby."

Todd narrowed his eyes. He walked to where Seryn sat and stood behind him as if he were using him to shield his heart. "After my friend gets out of the hospital, I'm leaving the city, Evan."

Evan sucked in a breath. "What? Why?"

"There's nothing here for me anymore. Not to mention those guys are after me as much as they are my friend. I can't stay."

Evan was a smart person. Seryn could practically see the cogs turning in his mind. He was trying to read between the lines. "You getting involved with these people is my fault, isn't it?"

"Yes, Evan. Because everything is about you?"

"You needed money after you left. You got it from these guys, didn't you?"

Todd spluttered, but recovered quickly. "It's none of your business what I do anymore."

Evan's expression fell. He took a step closer to Todd, holding out his hand.

Seryn imagined Todd taking a step back, although he didn't see it. Todd sniffled.

"I'm done crying over you, damn it." But he clearly wasn't.

Seryn would no longer be a shield for Todd's emotions. It appeared he wasn't very good at it, anyway. And it was clear Todd and Evan had to either work it out or find some type of closure.

Seryn stood and grabbed his coat, putting it on for the first time since last night. He pulled out a handgun.

Evan sucked in a breath. His eyes widened as he watched Seryn give the gun to Todd. "You can't have that in the hospital."

Seryn didn't respond. Instead, he addressed Todd. "Stay here. Shoot anyone suspicious."

Todd wiped the last of the tears away from his eyes. He frowned as he eyed the gun.

Seryn took it from him, showing him how to use it. He showed Todd where the safety was. When Todd nodded, he moved on. "Pull back until you hear it click. Then point and shoot."
