‘Yes. I’ll let you off this time. It was my mistake,’ she laughed.

‘That’s very good of you, Mrs Cavendish.’

‘Am IMrs Cavendishhere too now?’

‘Not officially I suppose although we can easily remedy that, but let’s not get bogged down with all of that nonsense. We married five hundred years ago and then again two hundredyears ago. What’s a couple of hundred years between husband and wife?’

‘I do love being married to you,’ she said. ‘I’ve got an idea for us to celebrate, married or not.’

‘Okay, let’s hear it.’

‘No, I’ll surprise you instead. Grab your bag, and let’s go.’

‘I don’t have a bag.’

‘You came all the way from Spain without any luggage? Do you want to pick up a change of clothes? We’ll be staying somewhere overnight.’

‘I came from Seville in the year 1840. When you move between timelines do you travel with luggage?’

‘No, of course not. I forgot you’ve come from back then. How is Cara by the way? Is she behaving herself?’

‘Only as much as she ever does. She’s a handful at the best of times,’ he said. ‘You could put in a good word for me.’

They laughed. ‘I’ll see what I can do. How about grabbing some things from your house?’

‘That would be wonderful if I had any things; or more to the point, if I had a house. As far as I know, I no longer have a house in York, never mind a wardrobe full of clothes. It’s part of the collateral damage of the disrupted timeline which, according to Eddie, was a result of you two meddling and trying to turn back time.’

Cara looked sheepish. ‘Oh yes, I keep forgetting! Sorry about that. You’ll just have to live with me then.’

‘I could get used to that,’ he said.

‘I won’t pretend to be sad you’re not married to Joanna. It was hell. I’ve been so angry I could have killed you, especially when I saw you with Kate. I thought we were about to go through the whole nightmare again.’

‘I’m sorry, my darling. But I didn’t know about our past when I married Joanna. What was I supposed to do?’

‘I don’t know. Not marry her? Leave her?’ she said, pulling a face. Those are just a few suggestions for you in case we ever have a similar scenario in a different timeline. Lord, I do hope we don’t. I must have cried enough tears for ten lifetimes this past year.’ She paused. ‘Anyway, it’s over now. We’ve survived. Joanna seems fine. I saw her with another guy.’

‘Yes, I saw them too. The doppelganger who’s taken over my house!’

‘Don’t be like that,’ said Cara. ‘As you said, it isn’t your house anyway. You have a beautiful villa in Seville, which, by the way, we first lived in together in Victoriana so it must surely be half mine!’

‘That’s not strictly true,’ he said.

‘How so?’

‘We were only renting in 1840.’

Cara sighed. ‘Wait a few years. You’ll see.’

‘Oh, that’s unfair. What do you know about the future that I don’t?’

‘A lot! But I don’t want to spoil it for you. You’ve enough to be digesting in the meantime.’

‘Spoilsport,’ he said.

She locked the cottage door, and they jumped into her car.

‘Will you tell me where we’re going?’
