Khalid had revealed a lot, and while I wanted to believe in this version of the world he’d depicted in his videos, it was quite possible that all of it was a lie.
Except Cedric seemed to believe him.
He has no reason to lie about this,Cedric told me softly. In fact, he has everything to lose by revealing it.
He was analyzing several avenues of strategy while he spoke, considering every conversation he and Khalid had shared, every potential word game, and finding each one linking to exactly what Khalid had divulged—a way to assess Cedric’s humanity.
You were the key, Cedric surmised. He wanted to test my resolve in keeping you, and I fell right into his play by going after you at the compound. He was waiting for me to forgo every façade, every requirement this society has for a vampire, go against my own maker’s principles, and take something for myself. To retrieve my heart and be willing to give up everything for her—foryou. He glanced at me.You’re why we’re here now. You and my decision to risk my life to keep you.
He reached out to palm my cheek, his gaze searching mine.
“Is the shower large enough for two?” he asked.
“It’s large enough for four, but I imagine that wasn’t an invitation for Emine and me to join,” Khalid replied.
“You would be correct,” Cedric said, standing. “We’ll talk more when we land in Khalid Region.” He glanced at the royal. “How long is the flight?”
“Long enough for you to properly care for yourErosita,” Khalid replied. “Which reminds me, the bedroom is soundproofed. If you need something, you’ll need to use the intercom system.”
“We won’t be needing anything,” Cedric replied, his hand appearing before me.
“No, I suspect you won’t be.” Khalid grinned. “Have a good shower.”
Chapter 50
Cedric
A hidden societyretraining humans on the meaning of life.
It almost sounded too good to be true.
Except the concept reminded me of the old world, making it not nearly as far-fetched as one might believe.
But I heard Lily’s doubts as I escorted her toward the back of the jet. She was struggling to fathom such an existence, her indoctrinated mindset incapable of accepting the possibility.
I showered her with knowledge and experience, depicting a past in flashes of thought that had her glancing at me as we entered the bedroom.
She didn’t speak or ask questions. She merely listened to my memories and opinions, hearing the very real understanding of Khalid’s concepts.
Did I still wonder if it was all bullshit? Yes. But I couldn’t decipher a motive for him to lie about such a world.
Everything he’d said made sense.
And more, I agreed with his leadership decisions.
This new world bored me. There was no excitement or challenge. Just a bunch of enslaved humans who bowed to their morbid fates.
Lily had been my only intrigue. My renewed reason for life. And Khalid was offering me an opportunity to truly have her.
If it was all a lie, we would face the consequences of our hope then.
However, for now, I was choosing to believe in our future. To think about an existence where I could be with Lily freely. Maybe even turn her, if that was her desire.
I just wanted to be with her.
To love her.
To worship her.
