I shook my head. “He doesn’t know, and he won’t find out. No one will.”
“Does that mean she won’t go back to Sensation again?”
I shrugged. “I don’t know. I told her I wanted her to, but she’s pissed off that I’m married and I can’t fucking tell her the truth.” Unless she came to Sensation. That would be the only place for me to tell her.
He nodded slowly. “Sounds like you’re up shit creek without a paddle.”
“I have a solution. Get her to come to Sensation next month so I can taste her again.”
“You’re willing to risk your law license for a chick? Willing to risk hers?”
“No.” And I wasn’t. “You know as well as I do that what happens at Sensation, stays at Sensation.”
“Until Trent or Ava sees you.”
“If Peyton even comes.”
“Right,” he agreed.
If Peyton came as my guest, we’d have to figure out the details regarding Trent and Ava’s case. If she came as Ava’s guest, then it would be possible she already talked to Ava and was okay with us being romantic together—or whatever we’d be. I had a month to convince Peyton to return to Sensation, though. The ball was in her court, but that didn’t mean I couldn’t cheat. And it was obvious I didn’t play by the rules.
“Well, it’s time for our weekly meeting,” Randy stated as he looked at his watch. The meetings were a way for the partners to keep track of their staff and make sure we had a revolving door of clients. The meetings were usually in the morning but Mitch, the head partner, had been in court today.
I sighed. “Great.”
We both stood and headed for the conference room/library. Randy and I sat next to each other. When Clint walked through the door, I rolled my eyes. I hated that wanker. We were both running for partner, and everyone knew we were competitive. The current partners ate it up because it drove in more money.
“All right, let’s begin,” Mitch said. He sat at the head of the large rectangular table that sat at least ten people. Others, including paralegals and assistants, were standing around the room, and everyone had legal notepads to scribble on. He briefly went through everyone’s cases, and then turned his attention to me.
“Booker, Clint, you’re both up for partner, as you know.” People clapped and cheered at the announcement. My eyes flicked to Clint’s and his to mine.Fucker. “While we would like both of you to make partner, we’re only able to promote one of you, so we’re not taking into account who has been here longer. We are solely basing it on who’s bringing in the most money, and right now, you two are neck and neck.”
I sighed.
“We have three more months left of this year. Whoever pulls in the most money by then will be made partner January second.”
And now it looked as though I had two games to play. One with Clint that I knew I’d succeed in, and the other with Peyton that I wasn’t sure I’d ever win.
