She moved her lips over his with a soft reverence. With each stroke of her tongue against his, she tried to pour all the feelings she was keeping at bay from him—all of her love. When she kissed him, she forgot who she was, or where she was. Nothing else mattered. He owned her and she was happy for it. She felt his hands begin to move from her waist down to the curve of her ass when she heard a pointed cough behind them.
Pulling away with a scowl, Dimitri shot Dominic, who was now standing behind them, a deadly glare. Dominic looked unfazed and said something in Russian.
After a brief, if not terse exchange, Dimitri looked back at her and smiled. Taking her hand, he placed a kiss at her temple. "Let's get this over with."
Throughout the night, Dimitri held Eve's hand with a quiet possessiveness, a silent declaration amidst the gala's bustling elegance. Their mere presence seemed to draw a crowd, sparing them the need to traverse the grand hall as guests flocked to them.
It wasn't until their tenth round of small talk with a distinguished couple, owners of multiple investment firms throughout the state, that Dimitri caught Eve's wistful glance directed toward the buffet table. With a parting kiss that left her a little flushed in front of so many people, he released her, Granting, Eve the freedom to delve into the tempting spread across the room.
Eve was halfway to the buffet table when she remembered her hands. She had to shake at least eight pairs of hands already. The idea of picking up the delicious-looking canapes with her bare hands turned her stomach. Spotting an exit, she slipped out into the main hall and followed the signs for the restrooms down to another hall in the back of the building. Inside, she washed her hands and checked herself in the mirror once more before exiting again.
She was halfway down the back hallway when she heard her name. "Eve?"
Eve froze. She knew that voice. Turning around, she saw Landon standing in front of the men's bathroom.
He moved closer to her. "I thought I recognized you earlier."
Eve could barely stop herself from making a face of disgust as his eyes traveled over her. She could practically see the shocked appreciation in his eyes as he drank in her hourglass shape, lingering a little too long on her breasts. After far too many seconds, he finally met her gaze.
"What are you doing here?" She managed a thin smile.
"I'm here because I was invited," he informed her smugly. "What are you doing here? You look good by the way. Very good."
Eve was just about to reply when she stopped herself. Why should she? She didn't owe this asshole anything. Why was she wasting her time with him? Giving him a withering look, she turned back around toward the ballroom.
"Eve, wait!" The thumps of footsteps hitting the carpeted floor sounded behind her and then suddenly Landon was at her side stepping in front of her to block her path. "Wait. Can we just talk for a sec?"
With a forced smile, she stepped to the side. "No."
Again, Landon moved to block her path, this time his hand clamping down on her arm to hold her in place. Stepping close until he was only an inch away, he looked at her with the cold fury in his eyes. "Why? You got someone's cock to stuff down your mouth?" he hissed in a voice so cold she barely recognized him.
Although a part of her was waiting for this. Eve didn't know when or where but she knew someday, somehow, she would encounter Landon again knowing he had seen that intimate photo Dimitri had sent. But surprisingly, she felt nothing at this pathetic confrontation. Eve almost laughed. She really didn’t care one bit that he had seen her like that. Honestly, it kind of made this so much better.
Snatching her arm from his grip, Eve gave him her meanest smile. "You're just mad because I didn't like sucking yours. So do me a favor Landon, and forget I exist. I know I've forgotten about you."
Landon's mouth fell open in silent rage and Eve took that as her cue to leave.
"You-" Landon's sputtering rage fell silent as they both turned to the tall figure standing suddenly beside them.
Eve's heart skipped a beat in momentary fear as she witnessed Dimitri's icy gaze fixed upon Landon's hand, which was frozen mid-air, poised to grab her.
"If you touch my fiancé, I won’t stop at killing just you. I'll wipe out your whole family," he said in a dangerous honeyed tone.
Beyond him, Eve spotted the familiar figures of Dimitri's enforcers stopping at the end of the hall, forming an imposing blockade. No one could come down this way or leave. Not that it mattered, she realized. She must have unknowingly chosen a secondary restroom from the main ballroom; she hadn't seen anyone else besides her and Landon come down it.
Seeing this, Landon promptly took a wary step back.
A smirk twitched at the corner of Dimitri's mouth. "We should talk in private," he offered, his eyes indicating the door to a meeting room behind Landon.
Eve knew instantly what that meant and she shook her head. Grasping Dimitri's arm, she pressed herself against him and spoke in a soft pleading tone. "Please, he isn't worth it."
Dimitri looked down at her, one hand coming up to gently run through her hair. "Are you sure?" he asked, his blue eyes crackling with latent fury. "There was a time you cared for him."
Eve jerked back and made a face at him. "We all make mistakes, so please don't fling mine back in my face."
Dimitri laughed softly before dipping his chin in understanding. "But you know I can't let this slide."
"Wait?! What are you talking about?! Who the fuck-" Landon's words cut off with a pained grunt.
