Panicked, Brett stood up, his wide eyes bouncing from her to Dimitri. "What's going on?!"
Eve didn't need to turn around to know that Dimitri was coming up behind her, she only had to see the confused fear growing in Brett's eyes. She was surprised she didn't jump at the warm hand suddenly on her shoulders. She just sat there like a stone as the weight of his presence covered her back like a cape.
"I'm a big enough person to admit when I made a mistake." Although she refused to look at him, she knew Dimitri was speaking directly at her.
Eve refused to respond.
"I want you back, Eve." His black velvety voice wrapped around her.
Looking around at the men surrounding them, Brett stepped away from the table and fixed her with a scornful look. "I don't know what the hell is going on here, but I don't want any part of it."
Eve felt all her hope of getting out of this situation plummet as she watched him throw down his napkin and leave. She tried to call out. "Wait, I—"
The hand on her shoulder moved to her neck and tightened in silent warning.
Helplessly, she could do nothing but watch as Brett left through the small space the wall of men allowed for him. Getting up from her seat, Eve pulled herself from Dimitri's touch. Anger fought and won against the fear in her gut as she glared at the handsome bastard.
"You took what you wanted from me, right?" she hissed at him, mindful of his men watching them. "Aren't you done? I thought…I thought you got what you wanted." Wasn't that the deal they had made? He got what he wanted from her body that night and she was let go. That was the deal, dammit!
Dimitri gave her a serious look, his eyes dropping down to her feet before slowly coming back up to her face. "Honestly? I'm starting to suspect I may never be done with you." He nodded to the large man standing off to the side. It was the same man who had escorted her to Dimitri's penthouse that night and the same one she saw that following morning.
The man said something in Russian to the other men and they all began to file out of the restaurant, leaving her and Dimitri alone. Eve looked around; even the waiters were missing.
She turned back to Dimitri and crossed her arms. She would not let him intimidate her; she would stand her ground. "I won't let-"
Dimitri cut her off, taking a step forward. "Do you know what went through my mind when I saw you texting that guy and agreeing to a date?" Slowly, his gaze dropped from hers and settled on her raised breasts.
Dropping her arms to her side, Eve instinctively took a step back as she tried to process his words. "Wait! You read my texts?!"
Dimitri ignored her and took another step forward, closing the distance between them until they were only inches apart. "I thought of you giving yourself to someone else. I thought of him hearing the little noises you make when your clit is stroked. Or how you hold on so sweetly as you surrender to your feelings. And the thought of some other man hearing his name come from those beautiful lips of yours actually makes me a little crazy." There was something unhinged in his expression that made Eve draw back. "I simply can't allow it."
"Allow it?!" she shouted with incredulity. Eve shook her head and began to back away. She was done listening to this psychopath.
The sudden grip on the back of her hair stopped her and she cried out in shock more than pain. Holding her firmly in place, Dimitri pulled her back until her chest was pressed against his and she could clearly see the sparks of rage in the blue storms he called eyes.
"Nothing has changed, my sweet Eve," he growled. "I still hold everyone and everything you hold dear in the palm of my hand. You think your life is hard now, I could make it a nightmare. I wanted to gut the bastard sitting here tonight but I restrained myself for your benefit." Eve let out a whimper under the force of anger written across his face. Dimitri dropped his gaze to her lips and he placed a small, soft kiss on her closed lips. "You have no idea how much I want you right now. How much I'm holding myself back from taking you back home and fucking you until you can't stand. I want to see your eyes going wide and seeking mine out as I make you cum over and over again. I want to watch as you try to find the last remaining shred of my humanity deep within me as I fill your tight body with my need."
"Dimitri, please don't," she hated what his words were doing to her. She was practically trembling in fear but her mind was putting images to his words. She knew he meant every word.
Dimitri gave her a level look. "I'll spare that pathetic bastard and I'll let your lovely grandparents continue living in blissful ignorance and I will even let your idiot brother continue to work off his debt, as long as you come with me."
Tears ran down her face and he tenderly kissed each one before she felt his lips press against her closed eyes. The gentle, unexpected action made her shake. She didn't resist him when he pressed his lips against hers; instead she opened her mouth to his and let him kiss her deeply. The small surrender pleased him; she could feel his body harden and his arms around her tighten with possessiveness. Slowly, he pulled away from the kiss leaving her breathless and a little dazed. With his hand at her back, he turned and guided her to walk at his side and led her through the empty restaurant.
In the back of the SUV, Dimitri's hand rested gently on Eve's thigh. The heat from his large hand felt as if it was going to burn a hole through the fabric of her dress.
As the vehicle pulled away from the restaurant, she couldn't help but notice the change in direction. "Where are we going?" she mumbled.
As if he had all the right in the world, Dimitri massaged the soft flesh of her thigh and answered her with an indulgent smile. "I need your help in making a decision."
"A decision?" she repeated warily. Was this some sort ofcriminaldecision? Her mind immediately went to all of the TV she had seen over the years. Was he going to make her pick Brett's grave site in the desert or something equally nefarious?
Reading her thoughts, Dimitri chuckled. "I need help in picking a house."
Whatever she was expecting that certainly wasn't one of them. "A house?"
Dimitri nodded and glanced at his phone. "Yes, my last house I sold since a pair of teenagers broke into it and made it their temporary love nest." Seeing the confusion on her face, he continued. "Of course, I made them regret the decision but now every time I look at the place, I think of them."
"You didn't…" she mouthed the wordkill, unable to say it aloud, "them, did you?"
