Two hours later Dominic turned the SUV into a private road. Lined with tall cactus on either side, the long driveway led them to a beautiful angular house in the middle of the desert. Eve waited as Dominic came around to open her door, her eyes still magnetized to the sleek, modern house. Minimalist that bordered on stark, the house was a combination of stucco and glass. One side of the house was a panoramic of windows that no doubt filled the entire house with brilliant sunlight.
With her bag in hand, she followed Dominic to the door, noting the two other black SUVs parked around the house. The pit of dread bloomed in her stomach as she wondered what was in store for her. The last time Dimitri surprised her was with the spa day.
Again, she glanced nervously at the other vehicles and stopped. Dominic turned around, his usually stoic face betraying a brief look of surprise at her distressed expression. "Is there going to be anyone else here?" she whispered. They were only a few feet from the front door.
Dominic tilted his head in a silent gesture that said he wasn't going to say anything.
Unshed tears brightened her eyes as she thought of Dimitri's silence for the past few days. "I know he's mad at me. But I don’t know why," she cried softly. She began to speak again but Dominic's hands on either side of her face stopped her.
Wide eyed, she stood there frozen as he roughly swiped her tears away with his thumbs and gave her a flat look. "Stop crying. Trust Dimitri and go inside." And with that, he stepped behind her and gave her a little shove toward the door.
Inside, she stood there trying to gather herself as she soaked in the surroundings. The inside looked exactly like something out of Architectural Digest: stone art pieces, abstract wall art, and buttery leather furniture on top of no doubt real cowhide. It was all very high-end. Feeling like a Dickensian street urchin with her bag and teary eyes, she watched as Dimitri's tall figure came around the corner. He looked so good wearing a dark blue suit molded to his muscular body and black shirt and tie which complimented his gold hair perfectly.
When he got closer, she felt his sapphire eyes scan her face and watched his expression change into a worried frown.
"What happened?" he asked, clasping her by the shoulders.
What happened?!Was he serious?
Stepping back, Eve glared at him. "What do you mean what happened? You don’t talk to me for two days despite having a wonderful time at the gala. And now you invite me here for another one of your terrible surprises. I get here and I see other cars out there and I have to wonder if you're finally tired of me and if you're going to perform some weird sex play where you share me with your friends." Her voice broke at the end.
He advanced toward her. Slowly. Deliberately. With each step, Eve's instincts hummed until she was taking a step back with each of his steps forward. The wall suddenly at her back stopped her and Dimitri smiled evilly. With one blink his hand was around her throat.
"You're right. I do have a surprise for you. But you're wrong about sharing you, a topic I've already discussed with you," he reminded her with a pulse to his grip around her neck. "That's the exact opposite of what I want to do with you." His cool eyes studied her face and her heart skipped in her chest. "And since it's evident how little trust you have in me, we will have to do things differently than planned."
Taking her by the hand, Dimitri turned and began to walk deeper into the palatial house, pulling her gently along behind him. Not bothering to look at the enforcer standing silently by the living room windows, Dimitri said something in Russian. Immediately the guard nodded and turned to walk away toward the kitchen.
Down a long hall, they stopped at a door and Dimitri led her through. It was the master bedroom. The room was bigger than their room back at the house. Like the rest of the modern house, the room hardly had any furniture, just a bed sitting low on the floor set in a large platform and one stone art piece in the corner near the literal wall of windows. The windows were the true focal point of the room. Overlooking the vast nothingness of the desert and the mountains in the distance the barren design of the room with its neutral colors forced the beholder to truly witness the vibrant splendor of the desert.
Eve began to remark on the beauty of the room when Dimitri handed her a folded silk robe.
"Put this on," he ordered.
Looking at the robe in her hands and back up to him, she searched his face. There was a seriousness to him bordering on urgency that made her keep silent and nod. Going to the bathroom, she quickly changed out of her clothes and slipped on the cool robe against her bare skin. Her senses were a mess. Only a few minutes ago she had been a nervous wreck, imagining terrible outcomes to this mysterious impromptu trip. Now…well, now she was still a mess but with a different sort of trepidation. Dimitri was such a wild card, she never knew what to expect from him.
Dressed in only the robe as instructed, Eve ran a hand through her loose curls and glanced at herself in the mirror. Her long black hair contrasted nicely with the umber-colored robe. Taking a fortifying breath, she went back into the bedroom.
Dimitri was standing by the window when she emerged, wearing a robe matching hers. Eve couldn’t help but appreciate his muscular body in the thin fabric. Like the way his defined chest peeked out the opening in the front or the way the cinched belt accentuated his narrow waist.
Dimitri caught her roving eye with a knowing grin and beckoned her over with a crook of his finger. As soon as she was close, he reached for her glasses and slid them off her face with the same gentle reverence he always did.
"Lay down," he ordered in a hushed tone. "Arms and legs spread out."
Instantly, Eve's eyes darted to the bed and she noticed the straps at the four corners. Goosebumps prickled over her skin and a shiver ran down her spine in anticipation of what lay ahead.
Doing as she was told, Eve lowered herself down to the bed doing her best to keep her robe in place. Walking around the bed, Dimitri slowly began to strap in each wrist and each ankle until she was spread-eagled and bound.
A trickle of doubt cooled some of her warm expectations as she tested the grip of the straps. Worriedly she looked to the door and then to Dimitri. "It will be just you, right?"
Kneeling on the bed, Dimitri leaned over her and kissed her deeply while slipping something cool and dark over her eyes. "Not technically," he finally answered.
Panic surged inside of her as darkness enveloped her. The sudden sense of disorientation and vulnerability sent a trembling fear down her body.
"But you said—" she began trying to keep the panic from her voice.
A warmth covered her body. Eve inhaled Dimitri's cologne as he whispered against her neck. "Shh," he hushed her quietly while his hand settled over her stomach. "Trust me, Eve. You belong to me, and me alone."
She could feel his fingers working at the knot of her robe before giving it a small tug. The cool air of the room met her bare skin and Eve shivered at the thought of what she must look like tied down and naked against the bed. She wasn't sure she liked this. She felt vulnerable and a little scared. He just insinuated someone else would be here with them. She didn’t want anyone else to see her like this. But again, she felt the long lean warmth of Dimitri's body next to hers. It was such a wonderful feeling it kept the words locked in her throat.Trust me. That was what he had said. Taking a deep breath, Eve tried to let go of her fear and focus on the small kisses Dimitri was leaving down her neck and chest.
